Noticed this when I was hand washing my 4Runner...

I can not see ANY reason for this... It is located on both sides of the 4Runner... and the 4Runners on the deealer lot does not have this...

Yes the simple answer is "just take it off"

but still... WTF is this?

Special SR5 edition mudflaps???

Just went and double checked on my TE, they are there, you have to get down and really look for them or you'll miss them. the stick down 1.5-2" and go from tread centerline to the inner edge of the tire.

the part number lists it as "PROTECTOR, ROCKER PA " so I guess it protects the rocker panel from something...

Small splash guards. Something the trail will remove for you quickly! (But not as clean as if you just unbolted them!)

The trail always removes stock parts it does not want on our trucks!

As 1Engineer said, there must be a reason it is there, and it is not in the "form" category. Toyota spent money researching the need, and developed this small item to fix, correct, or help something. Who knows how much money they spent designing it, not to mention the production costs and tooling needed. It was worth the money to Toyota to have it there.

You barely notice it there. I only noticed it the first time by washing. I am leaving mine there.

I never noticed them before until my truck and gamerc's truck were both up on the lifts at Ducmonsta's shop the other day and Ducmonsta pointed them out. He made the same comment: they don't look like they do much, but Toyota must have put them there for a reason!

My guess: The small guards are installed to protect your rocker area from rock chips. The guards along with the clear tape you see protect your rocker from chipping if a rock were to strike. Without a doubt Toyota completes simulations and driving tests to discover where to place guards /tape.
