XenonDepot LED Headlight bulbs in 06-09 projector housings

HID's were plug-n-play, except the main power wire, which has to be bolted to the positive terminal on the battery, and grounds that have to be bolted to the body with bolts that are already there. No cutting or splicing necessary.

Night shots, 4300K Philips rebased bulb in factory 06-09 projector housings with HIR fog lights:

Cutoff is sharp, and will improve when I bend the shields to remove the "squirrel finders"

That still looks real good, I may end up gettin my things from TRS. So, you have no problem using those in the halogen projectors?

Or I could order a pair from where you got yours at.
So you stayed with LED in your fogs or get HID's for those?

For my money, the HID's in stock halogen projectors works fine. I expect even better results once I bend the shield inside and eliminate the squirrel finder.

If I can score a cheap or free set of S2000 low beam projectors, I'd swap them in, but I don't anticipate paying full price for any aftermarket projector system.

The Fogs and high beams have been replaced with 9011 and 9012 bulbs, which are still Halogen, but considered "HIR" bulbs. Basically the same base and configuration with a higher efficiency filament. They're the same wattage but brighter, so you don't have to worry about increased draw or melting wires.

Or even hidplanet for sale forum. I picked up a set of rx330 with tsx lenses for under $100 shipped. Will mod and be 95% of s2000 projectors for a fraction of the cost.

Great Review TheTurboMRT

Thank you for your work on this. I was about to click "Place Order" on my LED lights and your review allowed me to make the better decision to stick with HID due to the output difference you received.

Thanks!

I repeat, my dad just bought brand new OEM lights for his S2000, as the housings on the old ones have gone bad, beyond the ability to refinish them. He wants to sell them, but I might convince him that I need them. In that case, I already have ballasts, relays, etc. The only money I've "wasted" is on the retrofit bulbs. If I feel like upgrading to other lenses later, I already have the hardware I need, and only need the projectors and bulbs.

Have you tried rebased HID bulbs in the OEM projector housings? Everyone on this forum can accept that purpose-built HID projectors will be better, but the rebased bulbs in the OEM halogen projectors surprised me with how decent they are.

i wasnt speaking directly to you, just throwing out options to those that may be reading this thread.

i personally have 05 reflector housings, so no way would i ever try to install rebased HID bulbs in there!! got glare?!!

optics are optics. a HID projector's optics are different than a halogen bulb's optics. rebased HID bulbs may work, but they will not perform as well as if installed in a HID projector. no way around it.

Agreed. I was actually surprised with how well the halogen projectors handled it. I know it's not optimal, but it's "good enough for now" until I get the bug to improve it again.

My opinions overall:
Overall output:
Low beam
(worse) Halogen (OEM) < HIR (for 03-05 housings, not available for 06-09) < HID rebased bulb system < HID projector including lens retrofit (best)

Fog:
03-05: Halogen < HIR < HID (03-05 had projector fogs)
06-09: Halogen < HIR < HID, but HID should not be used because of glare from the stock reflector housing

High Beam: Halogen < HIR < HID, but HID should not be used because it is not made to be flashed rapidly, as one sometimes does with high beams.

And in terms of glare:
Low Beam: (03-05 reflector housings) HID <<<<< (06-09 projector housings) HID < HIR and Halogen have the same glare (stock) < HID projector including lens retrofit (best)

Fog:
HID (06-09 should not be done due to reflector housing, 03-05 isn't as bad) < stock Halogen/HIR

High Beam: HIR and OEM Halogen are equal, and HIR is brighter. HID should not be used because it is not designed to flash rapidly. Glare is not a problem for High Beams.

LEDs should not be used in any case (yet) because they haven't gotten to efficient enough outputs to match OEM. They will, but not yet (May '15)

I hope this all made sense. In the morning it may all get rewritten for clarity.....

Reviving an old thread.

LED tech seems to be advancing rather quickly. When this thread was written a few months back, HID was and may still be superior to LED in headlights for multiple reasons.

One of the reasons was because the LID output wasn't quite there (2500 LM LID vs 3200 LM HID). Now I am seeing LID at 4500 LM. Has anyone compared them to HID yet in the 06-09 projectors?

don't get caught up in Lumens. Many vendors advertise raw lumens vs effective lumens (actual useable light output).

HID is still the way to go.

Denso, Matsushita, OEM D2S philips (NOT a certain companies rebased bulbs).

I was thinking the philips bulbs. My question was directed at XenonDepot and which kit to get. The Xtreme kit has the option of getting the philips bulbs. Do you have a kit you recommend (or don't recommend)?

S4TA - I would suggest going with the Xtreme HID kit as the ballasts have a lower starting draw. You can safely install this kit WITHOUT the included relay harness and power the ballasts directly from the OEM headlight harness. You will not have any issues with the vehicle's auto headlights.

i personally do not recommend any kit at all. only thing i recommend is a proper OEM retorfit using proper HID projectors.

just throwing in a HID bulb into a halogen projector that was optically designed for a halogen bulb just seems silly to me. the focal point between the two bulbs is completely different!

all i have to say if you get a PNP kit..."GOT GLARE!!!"

I have 06-09 headlights and already plan on changing out the projectors. I want to see how bad it is first though. HID projectors aren't that expensive.

I still owe you guys some pictures of my '07 projectors with the rebased Philips HID bulbs... I'm happy with the result, it's completely different than the results people get from putting rebased bulbs in reflector housings. I'll see if I can find a large parking lot with a flat wall at night so I can take some pictures this week.

if you are planning in changing out the projectors, then i would suggest TRS HID projectors that pop right in. then you can use OEM ballasts such as Denso or matsushita and D2S based philips bulbs.

remember, if you try to get a HID kit now to throw into your current projectors, the bulb base is NOT a D2S, therefore you will have to get rebased bulbs. when you decide to swap out the toyota halogen projector to a HID projector, you will have to drop another $70 on a set of D2S philips bulbs.

(EDIT: forgot to mention, your pigtails from the aftermarket ballast will be amp connectors, so if you would want to reuse the aftermarket ballasts with the D2S philips bulbs, you would also to get an amp to D2S adapter)
