xmas vacation road trip la to seattle suggestions welcome

we are planning a trip to seattle for christmas. originally, we were thinking of taking the plane so that we can spend more time there with the family. we have 6 days off before we have to be home again. i think it would be fun to drive there. has anyone made the road trip to seattle from los angeles during late december? how is the weather/road conditions at this time of year? the furthest north ive driven was to san francisco area. im thinking it will take a day and a half to 2 full days at most to get there as long as there are no road closures. the 4R will be loaded with 5 passengers and luggage. got the 4wd and terragrapplers. should i buy chains as well? any other suggestions? best route there? or would you all suggest we just take the plane? i think the road trip would be a fun and beautiful drive.

imho, i think 8 days vacation would be better suited...

from LA to coos bay, oregon it took 15 hours... 5N the main way...

which route do you plan to take?

unless you like to drive and others like to be sitting for a while go for it... but it would be much more comfortable/convenient to fly.

The wife and I went to Seattle for 8 days this past summer and loved it. Hope you like good beer and great salmon - cause there is a ton of it out there. We stayed (with in laws) in West Seattle in Alki across the water from the skyline - very nice. We rented a Harley and spent 3 days in the Mt's - Winthrop & Levenworth were fantastic.

I like food!

ive made the trip from LA to seattle in *gasp* 16 hours. i was busting some behind though. normally should run you around 20hours. the only worries you will have is the Shasta Mtns the rest of the drive is easy. the chances of snow in the OR or WA area that time of year is pretty slim. youll just have the rain to deal with. You wont need chains, just drive slow over those shasta's they can get hairy.

ill be up in Seattle then too visiting my parents, but im flying to spend more time to drink.

Just fly. I have made the drive to NorCal from Seattle and it is too long for that short of vacation and that many people in the car. Make the drive during the summer. The oregon coast and seattle are some of the nicest places in the country in the summer. You are going to want to stop along the way. If you want a road trip you should plan for more driving time, there is alot to see along the way.

weather in december is great! sunny but never boring. we're going to be visiting sis-in-law. we're still thinking of just flying to spend more time but still not sure.

But Denver is a desert. I think Phoenix received more rain than Denver this year.
I can't wait to get back to Seattle (I'll settle for Chicago as well).

we'll be coming from long beach so i guess my drive would technically be shorter than yours by like 10 miles. haha. anyways, we've decided to make the drive. everyone have a safe trip.

i'd like to know the same as ozana what's worth visiting but don't think we have enough time to get sidetracked.

It has nothing to do with being a pansy or it hurting you? Are you really comparing a shower to rain? They are two different things. Rain once every few months is ok, everyday it sucks. To each their own, if you like rain good for you. I personally hated it, not cause I'm a pansy but cause it sucks
