Guys,
I know this topic has been beaten into the ground, but given all the conflicting opinions out there, I'd like some advice from people who have actually done this replacement. I have a 2006 SE 4Runner (V6, 4wd). The XREAS went bad not long after I bought it 3 yrs ago so, per a mechanic's advice, I had him disable the XREAS and install KYBs in the front and back. He did not change out the springs. The ride afterwards was still pretty bad but it's definitely gotten worse over the past year. Now it's really spongy, bottoms out, and is very noisy over bumps. So my questions for you are as follows:
1. I'd like to upgrade the shocks but am not sure if I should go with Bilstein 5100s, HDs, or another. If I don't care about lifting the vehicle, would the HDs be the best choice? (The only off-road driving I do is around construction sites.)
2. Regarding coils, some people have told me I do need to replace the coils and some people have said to just use the stock ones. Would the ride be a lot better if I changed out the coils as well? If so, it seems most people prefer the FJ coils. Is that the general consensus?
3. Are there are any other parts needed if I'm not wanting to lift the vehicle, or do I ONLY need the shocks and possibly coils?
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks for reading.
