All 4 Bilstein 5100's from Bilstein - KYB - Rancho - Monroe - KONI Shocks and Struts - Shockwarehouse.com
$378.66

4 new FJC Moog Coils (understanding they might take some "persuading" to seat)
Rockauto $86.58

I'd like to get all new hardware include the front top hats in case New England rust forces me to cut out the old stuff. Where are you guys getting those items?

Why does everybody always direct people towards the moog springs that have issues with fit? Why not just pay a little more and get new OEM? is it just a price thing or did they stop making/selling the oem ones or something?

to me, i would say price. i have over 164k now and i think i dont need to spend a fortune on it anymore.

Moog Rear FJ Springs = $47 (pair) from Rockauto, OE = $190 (pair)

The front coils fit fine and some people have seating issues with the rears. In my case they did not seat easily but when lowered the vehicle the weight of the vehicle seated the coils just fine.

Just to clarify, if one were to buy new coils, from say a dealer, they would be buying OEM rather than OE, correct? My understanding is that if something is OE that means it came off a car rather than being a replacement part.

Anyway, I'm just being lazy here...would you guys happen to know if there is a difference in spring rate or lift height between the oe(m) springs and the moog springs? I feel like I remember reading that the moogs are slightly taller?

Sorry, that was a typo. OEM from Camelback Toyota = $190 for right and left rear springs.

Not sure on the coil rate, they are not listed on Moog's site. Part 81081

I never knew they made aftermarket XREA shocks. If the system isn't leaking you might as well replace the shocks with new XREAS shocks.

I thought about just replacing one shock at a time if one failed but since I have 162k on the clock I know all others will still be on borrowed time so why spend any money on it.

I found FJ Trail Team Bilsteins shocks + rear coils with 10k miles for two bills on CL. Also found Top Isolators on ebay for $50 to the door and now only need the metal tech kit for ras. So about $320 for a full swap, I think that is very reasonable vs $130/shock or air bag, compressor failures

My truck rides really well at the moment and there are no leaks but when it does fail I will have a much better suspension ready for the long run

Was just quoted $1400 for 6112s in the front and 5160s in the back. Can anyone confirm if this is a reasonable price or not? And...if this setup would be ok for a daily driver, primarily pavement/highway?

Thanks!

Rear shock metal sleeve rusted away

Hi,
I bought a used 2003 4runner limited 4WD V8 a couple weeks ago and just found out that both of its rear shocks are badly corroded as shown in the attached picture. The zigzag-y thing in the center of picture is the corroded metal sleeve of the left-side shock. I have no idea what was kept inside that sleeve originally. Was oil or any fluid supposed to be in there but it got leaked due to the corrosion? Or, maybe, it is just a cover for the piston shaft and its loss doesn't necessarily require a shock replacement? Could someone shed a light for me please? My car has X-REAS.

Thanks.

Mine were Swiss cheesed like that, too. If they're that bad on the outside, it's a good bet they're also trashed on the inside. I swapped out my XREAS (you can't just do parts of it if you're going aftermarket) for Bilstein 6112s/5160s and have never regretted it once. Do yourself a favor and trash that rusty garbage.

Lol. I showed it to a nearby mechanic and he said I could replace just the two rear shocks at $1350 or replace XREAS with bilstein shocks at $1475. Do these quotes sound reasonable?

That depends on whether or not he is replacing springs also. You can get 4 bilstein 5100 shocks for about $350, so labor is $1000+ based on his quote....for just shocks. A complete, assembled Bilstein kit from Toyteclifts is about $1100....with new shocks, springs, etc.etc

If the mechanic is replacing springs and shocks, with a kit like Toytec sells, it is reasonable.

IMO, labor shouldn't be more than 3-4 hrs, or $400....you may simply want to buy the parts and pay for labor - OEM style shocks and springs, with pre-assembled coilover assembly for the front shocks, made by KYB are about $300 on RockAuto, for the entire kit, all 4 corners.....and stock rear springs are about $60, so really...if you go for stock ride and height, buy the shocks yourself and you pay to have them installed, you shouldn't pay more than $800-$900 for all 4 corners and this includes new springs front and back...IMO.

Wow great information. Thanks a lot. This forum is awesome.

One thing to keep in mind, if you do go with a lift, you'll need an alignment afterwards. That's another $110 or so. (At least around here.)

For my daughter's 4Runner, we went with 5100's and OME coils all around. I got the 4 5100's and front springs assembled of CL for $300. I bought a set of new OME rear springs for about $175. After the alignment, total should be around $600. I really like the ride of the OME springs with 5100's. No more bottoming out over speed bumps either.

Thank you for sharing your story, YetiX. Mine isn't lifted, so I guess alignment isn't necessary in my case. Unless you did it yourself, what was the labor cost like? By the way, my rear shocks don't have coils around it. If I go with a non-xreas shock, should I buy coil for all four corners? Sorry for many questions. I'm a total noob in car mechanic and just started learning stuffs with the purchase of this old 4runner :)
