Why would you avoid it? SOME have reported leaks. The transfer case leaks on SOME 4runners - your not avoiding them because of this issue.
No year is more prone than the other.
I have a Sport Edition, so of course it has XREAS.
I see that eskimochaos has jumped to the conclusion that you want to avoid XREAS because of the possibility of developing leaks, even though you never mentioned that....but I agree that leaks can happen, but seem to be rare. I haven't had any leaks yet.
The only other reasons I can think of that might make you want to avoid XREAS is if you're planning on lifting more than a basic spacer lift (in which case the XREAS system would likely come out entirely) or if you're worried about the cost of replacing XREAS later down the road when it eventually wears out. That is a real concern, as I have never heard of anyone shelling out the big $$$ to install a new XREAS system. When mine eventually wears out, I"ll be going with a conventional suspension system instead. Luckily, all that takes is removing XREAS and then you can run it like a normal suspension.
Removing XREAS isn't much more complicated than removing regular shocks. The only extra step is disconnecting some piping. You really don't need to avoid XREAS if you are going to be replacing the suspension anyways.
Keep in mind that you can keep the XREAS and add FJ coils and a spacer kit. Plenty of guys on the forum have done that.

What if you'll get a good deal with a sport edition?
Ah you can always replace the xreas with conventional suspension as mentioned above.
But if you fell in love with it

Just don't avoid sport editions and limiteds. In this time of bad truck and SUV sales, X-REAS don't usually add much to the price of a used vehicle, as most buyers don't understand it. Dealers will elaborate in listing the mileage, V8 or V6, 4x4/2wd and safety features.
Atleast if you get a sport edition with x-reas and upgrade the suspension later, you still have the hood scoop where only sports edition have it LOL!:naughty:

There's really no reason to avoid XREAS, in fact some people might argue just the opposite. The plus is that you'll a slightly easier time with any future lift / suspension mod. However we should put a big emphasis on slightly, since people who've removed and / or saved XREAS would tell you it's probably about 15 to 3 minutes worth of work saved and that's it.
On the other side of the argument many people, including myself, think the Sport model with the hood scoop and grey / black combo interior is the best looking overall 4th Gen model. You can only buy it with XREAS. So in conclusion by avoiding XREAS you might be saving a very minimal amount of work, and knocking out any opportunity to buy a cool looking Runner. Or in case the looks don't matter, you may also be knocking yourself out of the box for a potential dynamite deal of a Sport or Limited model you're disqualified from consideration.
Just a thought, but maybe you should just considering looking for the best over vehicle / deal, and take whatever suspension it has with a grain of salt.
