Yay! Broke my first CV axle!

Not really all that excited, but I knew it was coming. Broke it trying to climb some rock stairs. I am very thankful that I installed manual hubs two weeks ago. Set them free and drove home.

On to the question: Do you think the parts store will honor the warranty and replace for free?

Our Black Hills crew was getting into some stuff that could've snapped a CV or two today, but thankfully made it out intact. Some tough snow-covered climbs up narrow, twisty, rocky trails. So far my old '95 is earning its keep, making it up everything I've pointed it at. Bill, remember that one guy's tip this time about replacing the studs with regular bolts when you do the shaft this time--sounded like a good idea.

I believe I was instructed to replace the stud bolts with plain old bolts to make removing the axle easier. I think I will do this on both sides while I have it all apart........again.
 
Geez, if I thought it was going to create a problem, I would've done a search and found the correct name to list--LOL!
 
So what's the benefit of removing the studs and using bolts? I haven't had a hard time removing my front axles with the studs being there.
 
When I changed out the old one a few weeks ago, those studs were a serious pain to get out. They will probably be easier this time. If it was just bolts, I wouldn't have to worry about hammering them out if I break another (which I probably will while I learn ow to traverse big rocks and hills). It will make it easier to change out on trail if I ever have to.

I just pulled the 4 bolts from the upper control arm on the ball joint. Then tilted the spindle outwards and the CV came out nice and easy.

I guess if I was removing my CV's all the time then maybe I would put bolts in place of the studs. The only time I had to pull my CV's was when I installed my front lift kit. And then tomorrow I'll pull them because I found some 4.88 front and rear diffs out of a 95 4runner with the tow package. :)

I know that the auto parts store axles have a lifetime warranty but...

I will never (unless I just need to drive roads home) use one of these axles. They are made from cheap junk steel that is poorly heat treated. They can, and do, break inside the diff and are a beotch to get out. It's not worth it. They also break easier than Toyota OE axles. They are also know to bind and sometimes not able to turn at full droop.

In Denver I/we get our axles from CVJ axles. They rebuild OE axles.
