My windshield wiper pumps ceased functioning. Consequently, I spent all day yesterday replacing them. It seems that the previous owners of my 4runner had been using poor quality batteries and they leaked. In fact they leaked profusely and spoiled the pumps. Finally, both pumps are identical. I bought one at Auto Zone for $14.99 and the other at NAPA for $19.10. The NAPA part did not include a replacement seal, but the AZ box did. That gave me some trouble and waste of 3/4 hour as I had to make my own.

I had to do this with my first Runner (94) a few years back--they were so crusty they crumbled when I pulled them off! Two new pumps, and I was back in business. Never thought of battery corrosion--I just figured they had rusted out (the rest of the rig had rust issues).

Good to know about the Napa/AZ options. I'm short a washer pump due to my own stupidity and all I could find were OEM Toyota pumps - those are over $100 each :wow:

At that price, I figured that I could do without the rear washer and wedged the reservoir from a pickup in there with the one good pump I had. For $20 though, it would be worth picking one up and reinstalling the old reservoir.

Edit: oh, and you can get replacement seals from Toyota for about $5 if your DIY seal doesn't work out.

Geolander, thanks for the info regarding the seals. So far, though, I see no leaking. I often wonder why anyone would put a cheap battery in such a powerful and electrically complicated machine, too.
