Your favorite tools for wrenching / tech tools for special applications

I'm in the market for an upgraded welding shield, can anyone recommend any auto darling ones they like in the $50-$75 range? I know about the hf ones, but wanted see if y'all had any hidden jems or wether I should increase my budget? I weld a few times a month on a flux cure Lincoln, but I'm planing on Getting gas for it soon. Thanks

Go check out cyberweld.com they have pretty good prices for decent helmets. I have a 3m Speedglas helmet which is definitely way out of your price range. But I think you might want to bump it up to a maximum of ~$150 to get a good quality yet still somewhat of a bargain helmet.

Head to your nearest home depot. Some stores have Pennzoil Dex VI, dot 3 brake fluid, power steering fluid for Asian vehicles, some Gumout and STP products for $1 a bottle.

I cannot recommend enough going to the auto store and renting a pickle fork and/or ball joint removal tool. I am still very much an amateur and learning. But, after struggling for a few hours trying to press the upper BJ with a gear puller, socket, and all the other bs ways people have used to get them out; I went and rented the tool which was an hour drive total and pressed those suckers out and new ones in. I think it took maybe 45 minutes for both. I was so pissed that I wasted so much time trying to get them out instead of renting the tools for free, and doing it in a fraction of the time. :doh:

An assortment of U joint style sockets, or at least the adapters. Amazing for getting into weird tight spots (3rd gen starter, anyone?)

Napa is apparently going to stop offering single tools and only offer sets so they are clearing out individual sockets, wrenches, etc right now. I picked up flex head sockets in 3/8 from 8mm through I think 17mm at $1.25 each

Part of the process of buying a breaker bar is walking with it over to the pipe section of the hardware store and getting a 3' section of black iron pipe that fits over the handle...

I’ve used every type of material for cheaters you can think of lol.. for small applications where you only need an extra foot or so pvc is great cause it’s so lightweight and strong. I specifically use 3/4” cause it fits on my breaker bar nicely.

Ha, yeah that's exactly what I've got. Nevermind that all the breaker bars say "do not use with a cheater bar". I break the drive off the breaker before the bar itself snaps in half, though if that ever did happen due to a defect I'm sure it would not be pretty.

Living in Maine, my favorite tool is my oxy/acetylene torch. With the incredible amount of rust we have here auto repair would be impossible without it. I'm also pretty partial to my IR 3/8" composite-TI impact gun, IR 12v impact driver, Cornwell's big deadblow hammer, plastic & metal hammers and big prybars. Rechargeable LED lights with magnets on them are a must. Oh and I almost forgot, Cornwell 3/8" drive swivel impact sockets and gearwrenches.

Also being in the northeast my favorite tools for removing bolts from the undercarriage are pb blaster, a propane torch, and a pipe wrench. The pipe wrench is amazing for getting rounded off bolts out and worked well for removing my old steering rack guide cap which was stuck in place

I also have a 1/4” drive impact driver with a socket adaptor that works really well for when I don’t feel like firing up the compressor to use an air ratchet

Tap sockets. Specifically, Lisle tools #70500. Allows using your 1/4" or 3/8" ratchets, breaker bars and extensions on ordinary taps and screw extractors.

Expensive, to be sure. Suggested retail is 46.15. However, in preparing this email I stumbled across a Sears site that shows the set for $20.96, and Amazon is matching that price.
