Great mod. I like this I've been researching options for auxillary lighting at the rear, and this may be the slickest yet. I'm not looking for reverse headlights, so I might try with a much smaller lamp. This should help alleviate the load on the brittle parts that appear to fatigue over time. My purpose is really for working on things behind the truck at night, in particular a trailer. But having these lights at bumper level isn't good for that, so this would be a better option. Look forward to seeing the updated write-up.

Thanks! I'll post the details when I get the new piece perfected. The one light has held up well on its own. Some rubber and a big washer will make it perfect this go around. Just having some issues painting the new piece.

I ended putting similar light facing the back first at the hitch then I mounted them to the roof rack, mainly I wanted to be able to see while backing out of dark dirk roads when night fishing. But not to say I wouldn't use them for another reason. I had no problems with the law and personality don't give a shit. But the one light that gave me the most trouble was yellow fogs. The factory ones I changed to yellow and had a cop crap a brick over it called in 3 of his buddy's on the interstate wasted 45 minutes threatened to tow me. In the end I got a verbal warning. But I encourage everybody to look up your state law and I bet you will find its not so black and white lots of grey area on interpitation. I think that's why the cops let me go. See you have driving light, off road lights, fog lights, forwarward facing white driving light and more. Besides what comes factory? Opens a big can of worms.
Regardless the cops failed to notice the other 3 things that were not legal staring them right in the face like my white parking light.
I say do it unless you want to deal with a D%#* of a cop!
If some one rides my ass I give them a brake check get behind them and turn on my 12 white lights :wink2::wink2::decision:

I was pulled over in Northern Cal by CHP. He said he pulled me over because my 5x8 utility trailer had no license. Since I am from Oregon I told him that Oregon did not require said license. He looked disappointed but said, "OK, have a nice day."

How?

So I'm trying to add a batman logo right where the old Toyota logo is, above the rear license plate. I was hoping to add lighting to it, but I wanted to activate it with the brakes and/or the turn signals. How exactly did you get your wires through the whole car to get it connected to your front dashboard? I just don't see how that's possible without pulling the whole car completely apart.

I can tell you that in CA, the CHP have multiple cows over rear facing lights. The 20W projector lights on my truck that face backwards were accidentally turned on by a girl in my truck while I was on i-80 near Oakland and every other car on the freeway backed off from behind my truck for about 1/4 mile. Shortly afterwards, a couple CHP's were racing to pull me over right before I turned them off... They are so bright that there is no way you could see at all if you were behind me. I generally do not road rage on people any longer in my 4runner as most people just seem to crash and I feel bad afterwards.

We can all agree that tailgaters suck, but if flashing one with a lighting setup like this causes an accident, a ticket may be the least of your worries compared to the potential liability. Your insurance company might also try to deny the claim because it was caused by a mod and your intentional act. You could even be open to criminal charges. Just something to think about.

I bet you guys are all pretty young and have good eyes. I’m not...so much any way. When I get hit with the jacked up HID’s in halogen housings at night on a dark road it takes a good 10-15 seconds for my eyes to adjust back to normal. Just a little perspective.

You hit an old person or anyone with bad eyes with those things (tailgate lights), whether it be deserved or not, and they crash, whether you get caught or not, it’s on you.

Let’s say you do get caught, that lawyer must prove malicious intent, this entire thread is pretty damn good for that. Don’t dig yourself a hole you aren’t ready to lie in for eternity.

While I get what you are saying I’m confused by your correlation of vehicles with modded headlights in justification to tailgating ? There are laws against it and you should maintain a safe a driveable distance from the vehicle in front of you.

Also for anyone who has their vehicle lifted or modified headlamps the vehicle should absolutely be re aimed. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen anymore.

My bad. I meant the jacked up headlights comment as an example of an instance where sudden bright light temporary blinds me on a dark road.

Agreed. I’ve seen a few knuckleheads showing off their 80,000 lumen LED lightbars or headlights in broad daylight and it’s painful to look at.
