zgensler31's Build Thread-1996 Limited

I haven't talked to the owner yet because I don't really have any place to store the thing. For that price, you really can't beat it.

Just bumping this up looking for some more in put on this swap idea.

Every where I read keeps telling me that its a difficult swap but wtih habkng a complete domor 4runner I feel like the hard part is all done. Every part I would need is right there...its just the straight up labor that is left.

What do you guys think?

Is there anything missing?

So its been a while....time for an update.

My misfire, that I feared to be low compression, turned out to be just that. Cylinder 2 was at 15psi while the others read at 185-200. So obvious problem there. While working on a solution, albeit for like 3 months, I continued to drive it daily. It cranked over every time. Drove, never over heated or stalled out. Just burned through some oil here and there.

I get it inspected in january. Pick it up from the failed inspectionto the tune of it now missing on two cylinders. Number three is now also bad. Down to 5psi spmehow magically overnight in the shop. Oh well.

To pass inspection, it needed front brake pads, front sway bar links and bushing, front corner lihts and the license plate bulbs. I had just got my tax return, and immediately blew it all on my truck. Lol

Tundra 231mm brake upgrade, in thw powerstop powdercoated, drilled, slotted and ceramic flavors courtesy of summit racing. Love it, it ia absolutely amazing. And I went with a home made brake bleeder like speedy used and it worked fabulous. I highly reccomend it. Only cost me $11

Got the napa endlinks and some energy suspension poly bushings for the sway bar.

And since I was already replacing a bunch of bulbs, I went ahead and got some leds. Got them at superbright leds. Did the guages, key ring, marker lights, and license plate bulbs. The rest to come soon.
Pics also to come soon.

And I have finally saved up enough to fix my motor.

I researched every possible option. One even being a used motor that came with a supercharger. I ended up deciding thag the best option for my and my wallett, to get a good motor that wiuld last, and I ciukd count on for years, was to pick up a jdm import from the jdmzone.com I ordered mine through their ebay link, made an offer and ended up getting it for
$1150 plus $129 shipping. It should be here sometime this week.

I also ordered a timing belt water pump kit on ebay from aircabin man. I went with his all toyota package. I think it was $327

I ordered some cheaper valve cover gaskets for like $17 bucks and also picked up 6 new plugs for it. Im going to reuse the ~8month old ngks I habe on my current motor. Also plan on outting in a new rear main seal while I have it out. Ill go oem with that.

Other then that I began pulling the drivetrain out of my donor truck. Im going 5 speed all in one full swoop when I install the motor.

Ive currently got all of the accessories uninstalledm the fan is off, the shifters and interior pieces are all out, radiator is draining overnight. I have the ecu out and the harness pulled throygh the fire wall.

Tomorrows, plan is to drop the drive shafts, transfer case, and hopefully get the harness seperated from the body of the truck. Then pull the motor/trans and split them.

Also need to pull the pedals and clutch lines, master and slave cylinder as well. Im just hoping that the clutch is good. And I would also love to be able to pull enough money together to throw some headers on it while I can. But well see, long journey ahead.

Alright some more info for everybody.

Motor was delivered last wednesday, only three business days after purchase, was packaged great, and seems to be a great condition motor. Very pleased with the transaction so far. Ive even got a pictjre for you guys that love pictures.

And I also got all of my ebay parts to mount onto that new motor. The timing kit, valve cover gaskets, and the spark plugs.

As far as the work goes, ive got the donor, motor and trans ready to be pulled. Everything has been disconnected, including the transfer case.
I also have all the other parts that I need from the donor truck. Brake and clutch pedals, clutch master, the drive shafts, shifters etc.

All that is required now is time to do the work...,

So time for a huge update.....

I got the motor and transmission in. And its amazing.
Alot more details can be found here....
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/155303-possible-5-speed-swap-input-appreciated.html

So just some quick details on it.

Got a jdm motor, from jdm engine zone out of clifton new jersey. Pir hased on ebay via the make an offer option. Basically got it for 1250 shipped to western pa. Pretty good to deal with. Good communication on ebay. Extremely fast shipping. 3 business days from purchase and it was in my garage. And kost importantly a great motor.

It was from a hiace mini van so some parts needed to be swapped, which I got from the donor 4runner. Things like the ac mount, the fan pulley, the oil cooler, the exhaust manifolds, and the throttle body. Did this without my 4runner being down wjich worked out great.

I swapped the 5 speed in at the same time. Really quite simple, especially when already pulling the motor. Went with a new aisin clutch kit. I also switched from a push buttin transfer case to a j shuft transfer case. Wiring was easi, y the hardest part, but was really jot hard at all. Just took time and patience. And the exact wiring diagrams. danthemanx07 AND TheDurk were instrumental in helping me here because I had never tackled something like this. But really with there help to bounce ideas off of, its not hard to figure out at all.

Anyways here are the pictures.

And the money shot!

Afterthoughts.....its amazing and well worth it. My 4runner no lpnger shakes like an 80's diesel. Its got power. It doesn bog out on hills. Thw five speed has gotten me up to 18 mpg while driving it like a sports car. Its actually quote quick now with the manual. And it is sooooo much fun to drive.

Every time I get in and drive it around I am still amazed that I pulled this off. I didnt screw it up!

Huge thanks go out to TheDurk and danthemanx07 for there help. Truly insteumental and couldnt have been done without you.

so I've been putting the runner to use lately. I've got about 2500 miles on it since the swap. Everything Is running great.

Just one issue with my clutch I gotta fix.

I apparently cross threaded the hard line going into the master cylinder. And after avoid 2000 miles it started to leak a bit. I haven't had time to get to it yet, but I feel like correcting the cross thread and Re bleeding it should fix it no problem.

Also picked up my first MX bike a month ago. 93 cr125r with the works, it rips pretty good and price was right. $900.

So I've been hauling it around.

I also just ordered a bunch of stereo stuff for it finally.

Kenwood dpx500bt head unit-$150 from amazon

Metra connector for it.
A pioneer mono amp($125 amazon) for my 2 subs, an amp qirng kit and capacitor, and the adapters to run both antennas we have.

And thanks to my American Express points, only had to actually pay like $27 dollars I think.

Gonna be running my 2 12" American bass subs. 400 watt RMS 600 watt peak.

And will eventually upgrade my door speakers. Going components in the front and basic in the back doors, and running them off my earthquake amp I picked up in a trade.

hey man i really like your build. Especially the trans swap. Ive really wanted to do it i just dont know that much about it. I know the essentials just not all the little thing and not sure if i have enough money being a college student :noidea: Im also from PA (central PA) We are kinda limited to where we can off road.. The only place i have is my cabin in western PA

Thanks man. But really it's not a difficult swap. Just do the research and stuff before hand and it can be done in a couple days.

I hear you about wheeling spots though.

Do you have an estimation of how much it cost you? And did you do it all yourself?

I did everything but resurface the flywheel. Cost, I found a wrecked 4runner that had everything I needed. Aside from new clutch and cover. Which was $200. All in all I made money in the swap/partout and still have transfer case and box of parts for sale.

I finally fixed my clucth master leak. I replaced the master cylinder slave cyliner and the hardline between the master and the clutch hose. Man this pedal is so smooth its unbelievable. Ive never driven a 5 speed that shifts this good

Exactly what parts are involved in manual swap ? Part by part do you remember. ? Glad to see your jdm motor running smooth and 4runner looks sick.

You need trans and shifter.
a clutch kit (pilot and release bearing, disc and cover)
flywheel

Then your gonna need the master cylinder and slave cylinder.
Either custom plumbing or the oem 2 hard lines and the hose.

clutch pedal assembly
Depress switch is mandatory.
Release switch is for cruise.
Brake pedal to make room for clutch.

The interior boots
Also a thick rubber boot that bolts to the body and makes its water tight.

Also a must is wiring diagrams for your truck and whatever the trans came out of.

If you have an electric shift transfer case, then you'll need either a custom shifter or to switch to a manual just shift case like I did.

You'll also need to address the rear drive shady length. Either get a manual one or a spacer of some sort.

I have a 97 and I found a 97 with manual and slicker for cheap. Is that easier ?

Slicker? I'm assuming you meant elocker?

But yes. If you can find a wrecked or rusted out manual to use as a parts vehicle it makes it so much easier and way cheaper. I bet you could get molly to go with you since your looming for a chaperone.

It only has front end damage. Bumper, lights, condensor, few other. The hood is good. No paint job needed. It has 235k he's asking 1500, 97 5 speed elocker. !!!! I still need to swap everything you mentioned ?,

1500 seems a little steep fwiw. But yeah. Sounds like a perfect candidate. Might be a bit high for mileage on your trans??? However the R150F trans is pretty stout. But yeah, that gets you all the psrts youll need for the swap, and the rest of the teuck to part out as well.
