You would take a saw or 240 over the m2? Obviously you have not used a .50... I have used all three "in country" and by far I would take the .05. An ammo can for a .50 holds 200 rounds, and thehe 240 ammo can only holds 200 as well, so their is no difference. Sure .50 weighs more, but its raw power is over 4x that of a 7.62. And lest not forget that you can get APHE rounds for the .50 as well as depleted uranium that will penetrate armor plating and keep going... IMO the .50 is the best weapon system to have mounted -keep the saws and 240s for dismounted use... Best option would be the CORWS.
I too have used all three weapons systems in country. While I agree with you about everything you've said about the .50, think about this:
When attacked by the durka-durka, or anyone else for that matter, if you fire a huge weapon such as a .50cal, the sound of that weapon is going to frighten them more than anything. It's been scientifically proven that sound is more frightening to people than anything. Hence, when you come home from a deployment, you hear a boom from arty or a tanks that are doing training missions, you flinch. Well, at least I do...(Damn PTSD.)
Now, if you are facing a hoard of undead, the sound is going to have no effect on them. It's not going to frighten them away, but rather attract them to the noise. Not to mention, most encounters of undead are going to be in close proximity to to you or your vehicle. Fire that Ma Duce close to the windows and watch what happens to them.
The Max effective range of the M2 is 2 clicks with a tripod mount, and 1830 meters vehicle mounted. While the Max RANGE is 6.8 clicks, the odds of hitting something at that range are slim to none. When are you going to use the depleted uramium? I wouldn't want to risk those around myself, or other survivors, the half life of it would it too long. The APHE rounds, OK, I could see that.
The Max effective range of a M240 is 1100 meters vehicle mounted, 800 meters for a area target, and 600 meters for a point target. Plus, it weighs 50 lbs less than a M2. Sure, they both come with 200 round cans, but the weight of the cans is what's going to matter. PLUS, the 240 also has AP rounds.
Sure, the Ma Duce can reach out and touch somebody, but the odds of you needing that power are slim to none. Not to mention, if the vehicle becomes disabled, you can't just grab the .50 and go. You can with the 240.
As far as the 249, it has the same properties as the M4. Same max effective got both point and area targets. So why not have the option of taking those rounds, and slapping the mag into the 249 if you need to? Or, if you're holed up somewhere, and you need M4 rounds, take them off the 249 belt and fill up your mags.
This is a survival sutiation. Like I said, I DO NOT disagree with you about the .50 as a superior weapons system, just not the superior weapons system for the survival situation we would be facing.
