DRL and Turn Signal Mods.

Thanks. And just to confirm, I need the 3156, not 3157? They also sell a 1156, which matches our turn signal bulb #.

VLED is telling me this:

The reason there is an issue with the Toyota 4 Runners is that the center pin (Inside the Turn Signal Bulb Holder socket) is Negative: All other manufactures this pin is Positive.
There for we will build a custom V6 1156 Reversed Polarity Adapter just for the Toyota 4 Runners.

You may want to check the polarity on the center pin with a volter meter:
Center Pin should be Positive
Outer steel casing should be Negative.

But I seem to remember talk about our sockets not being negative polarity. Can anyone confirm if their comment is correct?

I know for the headlights the polarity is reversed, but that shouldn't affect the installation of the kit (which you don't touch the headlights unless you connect the dimmer which you should do). I remember the Tritons being plug and play. I do recall them asking if you have the ability to switch off the DRLs (on the control stalk). That seems to be important.

I have had the Gen2 V3 Triton LED Switchback System installed for just over three years now with no issue at all.

The new V6 system looks especially nice due to no longer needing a separate controller box, as it is now built in.

As for the reverse polarity, the 2006-2009 4Runners do not have an issue and should be a straight install. For those vehicles that do require reverse polarity, the wire harness is easy to swap around.

to keep this thread with pertinent information: My V3 Tritons have started to give me problems. I had to "warranty" one of the bulbs. Was sent a new one and now I believe one of the "ballast" is going. I want to say it's my fault b/c I notice condensation in the DRL/Signal lens. I definitely installed them tightly, but water still manages to seep in.

I'm still very happy with them. What I plan on doing is ordering the V6 TRITON 5K / 6K WHITE 3156 from vLeds. I pretty much want to start from scratch. Why? The last time I warranted a part, I was told it was no longer in production.

I still recommend the Tritons, but be sure to properly install them.

My Triton DRL's from V-Leds are working same as when i installed them about 3-1/2 years ago. I really like them. I did have a small scare a while back when i noticed one wasnt on, after inspecting i realized it fell out of the light socket, haha. Somehow it worked its way out. But was operating fine. I have been quite happy with these.

Hey Ed (awesome name by the way,then again I'm biased LOL) were you running switchback or single-color V3s, and will you be doing the same with the V6s?

Reason I ask is there's an issue with the V6 switchbacks. If the white circuit isn't powered when you turn the signals or hazards on,they will strobe flash. So as long as you have the white circuit wired as DRLs even at night (there is a dimming feature) you won't have the strobe issues, only time you'd have strobing is with the vehicle off/hazards on.

VLEDS knows of this issue and does not have a fix at the moment. They said I can send them back for a refund or continue using them then exchange with updated parts when available.

The Tritons hold up very well when they are wet. I wonder if placement (yours being up higher vs. mine which are mounted very low) has anything to do with it. Anyway, my vLed marker light is also acting up. I'm going to see if the bulb made itself loose.

I'm new to the forums but I have searched all over and I cannot find the answer to my question. Thought I'd post it here since it has to do with DRLs. Here's my question:

How can I turn the things on??

I have an '05 so it has the turn signals on the bumper as the DRLs. I've seen 03-05 models with them on and I think they look sick. For some reason the previous owner disabled them. But, I've searched everywhere, checked fuses, and nothing on how to turn them back on. I went to AutoZone and even the local Toyota dealer (Hoover, AL) and they couldn't do it. I'm just wondering if there's some trick I can do to enable them because I'd really like them on. Thanks in advance!

P.S. my turn signal bulbs and turn signal fuse relay are working, no problems there

Not all of them have DRLs. Take one of the turn signal bulbs out, if it's a 7440/7443 you don't have DRLs.

I pre-ordered in September and still have yet to receive my order. In November they emailed me asking about how my drl's were wired. They said I would be needing their resistors (VLR-6), which is delayed. I had the option to continue to wait or get a refund. I guess it's better that I wait than get an incomplete product that still needs modification to work properly. I'm hoping they'll work the bugs out soon. I'm itching for some switchbacks.

Speaking of Triton V6, I pre-ordered mine in early September, and just received them in early January. I did not get the switchback and I actually turned off my DRL via Techstream. Build quality is excellent and pretty straight forward to hook everything up (other than the heat shrink wraps lol). With the VLR-6 resistors, they have been great so far for turn signals.

That's GREAT to hear and see! My "band-aided" V3 are starting to act up again. I'm ready to upgrade to the V6 tritons. I'll post pics. Oh and yes, one MUST get the resistors to prevent hyperflashing. It is quite annoying.

NOTE: 03-05 4Runners: When installing the bulbs, be sure to take the DRL assembly out and install the bulbs. Why? This way, you can 100% be sure the bulb screws in correctly. When I replaced the bulb about a month ago, I noticed I used (vLeds sends many sized o-rings) a seal (0-ring) that was too big. I thought it was snug, but it wasn't. After a few years, water WILL get in. If you don't take the DRL assembly out, you will never notice it is installed wrong b/c they is no way (direct line of sight) to see it.

Hold on to the gaskets from your V3’s if you do get the V6’s. On my Tundra there wasn’t a tight enough fit installing the V6’s in the taillights and the thicker rubber gaskets off the V3’s provided a really really snug fit,so snug I needed pliers to install them. Also relieved to say the updated switchbacks did eliminate my strobing issue.

Ed I might be interested in buying your old V3’s if the price is right, have some lighting plans and the V6’s built-in drivers won’t work in this idea.

DRL Mod

New Member here. Just sold my wife 04 T4R v6 2wd w/ 231k and purchased another 04 T4R Sport v8 4x4 161k w/ DRL.

The question I have is in regards to the DRL mod... what steps would need to happen to make the mod on full time? I don't want to use a switch because my wife DDs the car and she will mess it up. From what I understand on the switch Pin 1 gets grounded out w/ the ring terminal and pin 2 gets hooked to the wire coming from the DRL connector. So could I just cut the #12 wire and splice into the connector side and run that to a ground source and have the mod on Full Time? This wouldn't affect my turn signal function either correct?

Yes, performing the mod without switch is quite easy. You are correct, Simply cut the green with red stripe wire clear thru and connect the side that goes into the Daytime Running Light & Turn Signal Flasher Relay directly to ground. It does not affect the turn signal function, it is just like you had the switch but left it in the Always On position all the time.

Resurrecting old thread - I've got an 05 SR5 with LED DRL's but need to replace the flasher relay due to being stupid. Anyway I was looking at replacing the relay with Diode Dynamics SmartTap LED Flasher for 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner. This relay allows you to customize what your turn signals.
