Whiteline Lower Control Arm Bushing Tutorial (120+ Pictures)

I have tons of goodies waiting to be installed. Many hours in the garage in my near future. They include:

Whiteline LCA bushings
Moog LBJ's
Moog tie rod ends
Total Chaos spindle gussets

Waiting on:
Total Chaos cam tab gussets
Poly Performance Taco Tabs

Also another project I decided to embark on is the install of exhaust cam gears with a 3 degree retard and an intake plenum spacer. Still waiting on those parts. I'm thinking I should start a build thread.

For anyone wanting to jump on the whiteline bushings I found a website where they are about $122 shipped, which beats even Amazon prime which was the former cheapest I found. Link here:

Awesome! I'm excited that more people are taking on this project and are helping to document their process here was well! After the control arm is rebuilt, everything is gusseted, and the cams are deleted, you're going to have a bulletproof front end! I did notice the Amazon bushings went up in price when I was organizing my service records. I got mine there for around $120 as well, which seems to be the best price for these. I'll add that site to the parts section for comparison.

I'm also really intrigued by the 3* exhaust cam retard. I love reading build threads, there is so much to learn from others experiences. I'd certainly be down to read if you get one going!

OEM LBJ Loop-Hole
So, I was browsing around TacomaWorld for fun and stumbled into a Whiteline Bushing thread. There was a guy that was able to get OEM LBJs imported from Japan or UAE through a 3rd party exporter. I don't know if the Tacoma and 4runner LBJs are interchangable, seems they have different part numbers at the auto parts stores. Regardless, the same method could probably be used to get OEM 4runner LBJs. Just thought I would want to pass this along to anyone interested in this option.

I just put in an inquiry to see if they can supply the correct part as I cannot find the part # anywhere. Even called a couple dealerships and they don't have access to the part number supposedly. Will update when I get a response.

I have a question about the LCA removal/install that I havenÂ’t found an answer to on this forum or through a google search.

I also had to cut the front bushing sleeves on both sides (4 cuts) to remove my 16 year old frozen rusty LCAs. They both stuck out on the front and the rear. (No issues with either rear bushing.)

My new, aftermarket (Detroit Axle brand?) LCAs came with the two ball joints and four bushings installed.

I am reusing my OEM alignment adjusting bolts/cams(?).

The front adjusting bolts are smaller in diameter than the new bushing sleeves.

Question: Can I buy sleeves, to replace the sleeves that I cut, for the front bushings so the bolts that go through the bushings fit more snugly? Right now, I think the front bushings will move around when I am driving. When adjusting the LCAs, the nuts turn a little before the LCAs move.

I donÂ’t want to go get an alignment and have them say there is free play in the front bushings. Before I replaced the LCAs, an alignment couldnÂ’t be done because all the adjusters were frozen stuck with rust.

I bought some aftermarket adjusting bolts that are larger diameter than OEM, but I couldnÂ’t figure out how to adjust them. It was easy to adjust the OEM adjusters. I may re-install the aftermarket bolts in the front bushings and try to adjust them again. I think they fit snugly, but I donÂ’t remember how snugly.

I had a similar issue where the Whiteline bushing sleeve IDs were slightly larger than the OEM alignment hardware, which had a little play that I was worried about. I took measurements a bit after posting this, and the pictures can be found in post #14 linked here: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3493028-post14.html
The OD of the rear cam bolt is a close to 13.5mm
The ID of the rear bushing sleeve is close to 14.5mm
The OD of the front cam bolt is a hair over 19mm
The ID of the front bushing sleeve is just about 20mm

long story short, this amount of play is fine and just has a small gap so they're in constant contact all the time.


Is this similar to the issue you're having? Or is the play you have more than what I was experiencing? If you're able to take measurements with a caliper or something, that would be a great way to quantify the amount of play you're experiencing. Do you have pictures that you can upload of the old/reused Toyota hardware vs the new larger hardware?

I also saw you had a question mark by the Toyota hardware, is the hardware you have still good if you had to cut things out? This is a pic of all the necessary alignment hardware on the bottom row (+the whiteline bushings and tubes that you won't have to worry about) to confirm you have everything.

I am just missing the two front sleeve/cam combos. I didn’t realize they were one piece. I cut the sleeves, not realizing they were attached to the cams.

Do you have the part #? If not, I can probably find it online. I can’t read the part number in the photo. EDIT: I found the part number online: 48409-60020!

I will be so happy to finish this LCA installation!

Looks like you got it all, thats great! Yeah theres like a million parts to the cams and they aren't the same front to back either haha. Was the play just as I had in the videos?

If you got pics and don't mind uploading, I'd love see! Its always satisfying to get a difficult project completed. Glad I could help, but seems like this one was all you!
 
I don’t have pics, but I can take some after my new sleeves arrive. It’s cold in Chicago now, and it might be a week before the parts arrive and I work on the LCAs again.

Without the sleeves, there is a lot more than 1mm of play (3mm?) between the bolts and the bushings. When I turn the cams, the LCAs don’t even move until the slack is used up. If I got an alignment done with the LCAs the way they are now, the alignment shop might say they can’t do it because of all the slack.

When the new sleeves arrive and I install them, everything should be back to factory specs.

let us know how that detroit LCA and bushings, ball joints last...It seems like easy way at low cost...but they don;t get good reviews and just plain are said to not last long at all..

I used white line bushings for LCA...and toyota oem for UCA bushings. so far its good ride and no problems...but its been less then 10k miles so far.

Anybody have consensus on how long these whiteline LCA bushings last or who's got the most miles on so far and results???? pro/cons

I have a brother who is a mechanic. He said, “Only buy OEM. The Chinese crap only lasts a year or two.”

My parts are all still pretty new, so I can’t say (yet) how long they will last. Now with COVID, I’m only driving ~100 miles per month.

I haven't seen much follow up on the whitelines, which is one of the reasons I created this thread. They felt like decent quality, and I liked that the bushing IDs had some little channels to capture the grease inside them. I have about 4k miles on mine, which isn't a whole lot. I'm going to try and disassemble them this summer to give an update and inspection on how everything stood up over the year and hopefully 10kish miles. I'm also not driving a whole lot with the whole COVID situation, so mileage is not going up very fast.

Control arm refurb

Great stuff.

I wanted minimal downtime and after reading a few posts about issues with Whiteline bushings I decided to get a bolt in SuperPro LCAs. They were $610 shipped but came preassembled. I’m sure this way is much cheaper.

I’m sure many that come after us will find this thread useful with the install.

How have the super pro lca’s held up? Price wise they are in the ball park with oem online.
