Wat's the small box that the radio wiring goes to?

So I'm installing my Ipod receiver and splicing all the wiring into the small box in the dash right behind the old radio. It has the factory wiring going in 1 plug in the front then splits off the back with 2 plugs. What Is that? Security, amplifier....? Power, ground and remote wires all come through it too. I'm about to bypass it if it's not important.

Thats the amplifier. If you are installing a new receiver I recommend getting a radio install harness. Best Buy and Walmart sell them. Should be under 10 bucks.

i removed it when i was installing my alpine deck. when i tried using it along with the new deck it just created a constant loud buzzing. haven't noticed any problems with it removed.

Well I ended up wiring it strait to the bat (with fuse link) and tapped into the acc fuse for the remote wire and what do ya know, it works. It was weird because even with the factory amp in the loop I was getting 12V to the power and remote and ground was good. It just wouldn't power on.

The head unit is Alpine's iDA-X305S Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. Ipod only unit. I also threw in my Alpine 90w(rms)x4 channel amp. I don't have the right speakers yet. My 5 1/4s are too deep to fit the back doors and I don't have the 6 1/2s for the front yet. I love clarity and this Alpine setup is kick a$$! I had it in my Galaxie and ripped it out before I sold it. Make your ears bleed loud! Can't wait to get the right speakers installed.:hungry:

Yeah, that is the factory amp...if you are going with an aftermarket HU you don't need it.

I, on the other hand, need new rear speakers...I just blew my NEW JLs...

The cone came completely off the middle part....weird.

Tried the same thing, didn't know what that was. After taking it to a shop they said that all I needed was to unplug the amp and use the original plug that goes into the amp for the harness you can get at best buy... would have saved me $150... I couldn't figure it out though. Should have checked here first. I'm a dummy.

Yeah,

any new Headunit will have ample power to run stock or aftermarket speakers, dont leave the factory amp in there, its useless. I tossed mine back in 02.
