4,000lb tow job with an 04 v6 - safe or not?

I got a phone call from a friend who needs to pull a 4,000 lb trailer about 50 easy miles. It's a 25 foot house like trailer that needs to be mover off the beach and back to Daytona. I have never pulled anything other than my 300lb KTM and that sits on a Versahauler that suspends from the reciever hitch. So I know the hitch can take 300+ pounds. I don't know if it requires breaks or not to be pulled? Not something I want to do but I would like to help this guy out if I can. 25 ft sound a bit big for a Runner? What ya think?

I pulled my 4000# boat prob. 22' long last month for approx. 1000 miles round trip. I couldnt have been happier with the performance. I still had great power and stability even in the hills of the ozarks. I did have a sway bar attached though, which you might need depending on how fast you drive and how many hills. I believe the v6 runner is rated for 500# tounge weight and 5000# tow cap. so you should be ok. Be sure to allow alot of extra braking distance you will need it.

I regularly tow a boat/trailer combo that weighs about 4500 lbs. The 4Runner tows better than my 5.3 Z71 Silverado. More power and faster up the long hills on the interstate. I have towed the same route numerous times with both and can hit a higher top speed up the long hills with the 4Runner. I have the V6. She does good. I dont see how the V8 could be much better, except for maybe a little more pop off the line.

Edit: I see now that you have bigger tires than stock by at least 2 inches in diameter. That is definitely gonna hamper your towing a little bit. Not tremendously, but you will definitely lose some off the line zip.

Mr. Coleman,
I was thinking of upsizing my tires to the 275/70-17's and was wondering if you really need to lift the 4Runner to make these fit? If so, then I'd have to settle for the 265/70's.....aggghhhh!

Be very caution when towing a trailer that you don't know much about. I have seen people throw weight numbers around that is up to 1000# different then actual. They felt that the manufacter weight rating is a fixed number, but they forget about the fuel in a boat, or all the shit they put in their trailer. As an example I have a boat with numbers on paper at 3900#'s, but when I took it to the truck scales it was 4300#'s. Your trans will suffer if your not careful, especially the 4 speed you have with the bigger tires.
