It is possible that the battery voltage dropped causing the electrical system to throw error codes. That happened to me last winter. I parked my car for the day and then when I went to drive home all of the driver aids (trac, vsc, abs, tpms) were disabled and the check engine light was on. Hooked up my laptop when I got home and it was all because of a voltage problem.
It could also be that your airbag sensor is malfunctioning because I'm assuming the airbag didn't randomly go off

Same thing happened to my '04 Limited last week. Light has been on since then and I haven't found much online except advice to take it into the stealership. Checked the connectors under the seats, but they are all plugged in.

There is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the SRS/AirBag Module. You need an SRS Capable Scantool to get the DTCs (some autoparts stores might have them, as well as some non-Toyota repair shops, and the dealer obviously)
The system is currently disabled when the light is on as a safety measure, you need to get the DTCs to know where the issue is. It could be a Clock Spring, Seat Belt Buckle, Seat Sensor, Seatbelt Indicator Lamp, ect.

Hmmmm, this seems to be a trend....
I've got a similar problem that my airbag light randomly comes on. It seems to be outdoor temperature related and comes on more frequently in the cold. It never comes on while driving, only when the car is first started.
I bought my 04 4Runner in July and the problem intermittently began in Nov/Dec (I'm in Colorado). It's mostly on now, though if I restart the car once the engines warm and not too cold outside (say above 45 degrees) it will often begin work.
I've taken the car to a mechanic who reset the airbag control unit which did nothing. They also ran the diagnostic which is giving off the code B1100. I questioned them specifically about connections under the drivers seat and seat belt tensioner and they said those give off specific codes so it wouldn't be that.
They recommend taking it to the dealer, but that it's likely to cost near $1000.

How did you find your answer and did you have a dealership replace the part? If so, what was the cost?

This happens in Subaru vehicles as well. If it's ^ what I am thinking, it's the spiral cable which also contributes to the clock/spring as well correct?

Bring this thread back to life. It happened to my 06 4runner. The dealer charged $135 for diagnostic cost. It came back with code B1181 (Open in D Squib (2nd step) Circuit. I did a "paper clip" tested before I took it to the dealer and suspected the same thing. I paid $130 for the dealer to confirm the problem before I spend $300 for the part. They wanted $750 (included $130 diagnostic fee) to replace the spiral cable.

It locates inside the steering wheel behind the air bag. There are Youtube videos on how to replace it. Not too hard. Just take your time.

I replaced the spiral cable. The dealer wanted $720 (part and labor) to replace it. I ordered the part for $220 and 45 min of work. It was very easy. Just follow the instruction (on youtube) carefully. I give it a 6 on the scale 1-10.
