Any reviews of the new Bilstein 6112's?

if im not mistaken, the Boss CO's are a larger bodied shock than the 5100 made by Toytec- i believe you are thinking of the Ultimate Lift shocks

the 6112's come with an Eibach 600lb spring from what ive read- i emailed chas @ TAP asking if they would/could substitute a heavier spring for those who need it...i will post any info i get back

At this time we have not tested any other spring options. From our research, a 14" long 3.5ID spring will fit.

anyone installed these yet?? im anxious to hear some feedback on these...they look like they should perform awesome on and off road...thinking to pick these up in the near future

im also gonna install 5160's in the rear as recommended by Total Automotive Performance- im just unsure which spring to go with...decision made tougher by me wanting no more than 1.5" lift in the back...does anybody know if FJ coils would work well w the 5160's??

ICON Springs would work awesome in the rear for 1.5" lift, thats our normal suggestion.

Good reviews here

Check out these installs, havent heard anyone who does not like the ride. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.372350719625854.1073741832.290179357842991&type=1

Remember folks, if Bilstein built the new shocks for a 600lb spring and you up the spring rate then you are back in the same boat as us like me who knowingly upped our spring rates with the Bilstein 5100's. I have the 620lb spring up front and the OME 895 rear spring and I can tell you my rear end chassis package is waaaay off. The front is off too, but for now not as bad as the rear. I cant wait to swap out to FOX or some other rebuildable shocks front and rear in order to get the handling exactly where I want it.

Gave in and bought 6112's about a month ago; running 5100's on FJ coils in the rear.

Can't say enough good about the 6112's. The ride is truly smooth and firm at all speeds, unlike the adjustable 5100's, which were rough and always out of synch with the FJ coils. The difference is HUGE!

Seems like the way 4runners should have come from the factory. Finally satisfied after trying 5-6 different options/combinations. Couldn't be happier!

Awesome to hear. Every kit we install, we hear that "this is how it should come from the factory" line - we totally agree.

I assume you have a 2010+ 4runner?

When is the 6112 kit for the 03-09 4runners coming out?

Bilstein 6112 Series Shocks are designed for the serious off-road adventure seeker and the daily driver seeking comfort and performance.

The all-new BILSTEIN 6112 Series Shocks are the ultimate suspension solution

Total Automotive Performance knows how the 6112 Series optimizes off-road and on-road capabilities with a 60mm digressive piston for increased damping control. We have been selected and are currently working with the Bilstein Tech Support on the testing and development of the 6112 series for the Toyota Tundra.

This Bilstein Truck Shocks kit features an adjustable spring seat which allows vehicle leveling, larger tires, and increased ground clearance.

Thanks somehow I missed that. Price is considerably more then I expected? I thought I read somewhere that there were going to be ~$500 which I could have probably justified but $700 puts then officially out of my price range

It will be worth it to save up. This is definitely worth the 655 we sell them at or more. You cant get this kind of performance from any other brand of shock for under 1000.

I don't doubt it but my truck is 99.5% Daily Driver so as nice as this kit may be, I don't really need that level of performance. I just want a slightly higher, more level stance and to get rid of the nose dive without negatively effecting the ride and front end geometry too much.

A higher quality matched set would be nice but this kit plus the 5160's and a set of springs for the back will end up well north of $1k. FJ's springs and 5100's all the way around will cost less than half of that. The FJ Springs/5100 combo maybe not as nice but its probably fine for my needs?

If I was more of an offroader, I would definitely be looking hard at this kit.

It's all about what you find acceptable. I too am a 99.5% daily driver. I went the Bilstein 5100/FJ coil route. I tried three different height adjustments on the fronts. The valving on the shocks does not match that of the coils, and road vibration at 50-70 mph became intolerable. After three months I bought the 6112's, and like you, thinking it might be overkill.

What I do know is that the ride is COMPLETELY different. Firm but forgiving and smooth at all speeds; minimizes nose dive and body roll. It's definitely an investment, but for me it was MORE than worth it.

That's good information and I appreciate it but the funny (actually frustrating) thing is (and this isn't specifically directed at you) is...

Before this new kit came out, I did a lot of research on the 5100/FJ spring combo and based on what I've read (and as much as you can trust "people" on the internet) a lot of people have installed that combo and just about everyone of them raved about how great of an improvement it was. Now that the 6112's are out I'm hearing comments like yours. Where were all the negative comments about the 5100/FJ combo before?

I'm not in any way accusing you of lying, shilling or anything else shady but for a guy like me who only wants to do this once, do it "right" and not spend a fortune in the process, its really hard to figure out whats what?

I realize that "perfect" to one guy can be "crap" to another but I don't live in a area with off-road shops or Toyota clubs to check out other's rides so I can see/feel first hand how I like them for myself? All I can do is do the research then go with my gut and hope for the best.

:iagree:

I could have written EXACTLY what you wrote about the research and everyone's glowing opinions of the 5100/FJ combo and wanting to get it right the first time!

In all fairness, there were a few reviews that tipped me off the roughness of the 5100/FJ combo. Reality is, some (most?) guys really love that combo. On the other hand, several, like me, have swapped it out within weeks.

I would love King/Fox/or Icon shocks, but the price is prohibitive. The 6112's were a total gamble based the specs (60 mm shock body) and a few comments; the coils are engineered for the shocks and valved specifically for the 4runner. There was every possibility it could have been a loser. Thankfully it was the opposite.

If you lived in the SF Bay area you could come and drive mine and decide if it's what you are looking for.

Good luck!

Well I do thank you for the info and insight. I guess the thing for me is my 4runner is kind of a temporary "in between" ride. I had a full size truck before and will be getting another one in a year or so. I bought the 4runner to hold me over until then.

As a full size truck guy, I'm surprised how much I really like the 4runner. So much so that I may end up keeping it much longer then I originally planned? The thing is, I'm not in love with the specific one I bought enough to want to dump a bunch of extra money into it. Don't get me wrong, I like the one I have but if I knew I would be keeping it longer, I would have been picker about which one I bought. Basically I wish I had gotten a Sport edition with a V8 in a color I liked more.

I haven't really warmed up to the 5th gens (especially the 2014/15's) but if I can find an '08 or '09 V8 in Mica Gray and low miles (at least under 80k), I would seriously consider upgrading. If I did that, I would then have no issue spending an extra $3-4K customizing it to what I want.

I'm currently running the FJs and I'm not a big fan at all. Only set the front at .85 and it ride more rough (jittery) than my 2 inch lowered car. At times it'll get jumpy if the freeway gets rough.

At least we got more options for lift now.

Thanks for chiming in guys. Its good to have all this info out there.

Would love to see some independent reviews of the 6112 vs the Boss kit vs Ironman. We know which one rides/performs the best, but some honest independent reviews would be nice
