Console Cigarette Lighter 12V Power Not Working

Hi guys,

My 2006 4Runner is equipped with the center console cigarette lighter 12V source as well as the cargo 12V source. The center console source is not working. However the cargo 12V source is working fine.

Are both of these 12V sources on the same fuse? If so, it can't be the fuse. If both sources are not running on the same fuse, then I'll check the fuse.

if the two sources are on the same fuse, then I'll have to pull the console and see what's behind there. anyone know how to access the connector under the dash? I'm hoping the trim just simply pulls off?

This 4Runner is not equipped with the 115V power source.

From what I've read the console lighter has a fusible link inline with it that is not replaceable. Mine is not working either/ I was going to take it apart and add a fuse to it but never got around to it.

if the console 12V source is on a fusible link, then what is the 10amp "cigarette lighter" fuse for in the fuse panel under the steering wheel?

and I'm hoping the fusible link is close to the cigarette lighter so I can cut it off easily (if necessary) without chasing the link behind the dash or something like that?

They are on different fuses. I know this because on the way to California last year I blew both of them.

I can't remember the exact terminology but them but one is a 10a and one is a 15a.

The front and rear power are on the same circuit though.

Checked my manual...

Just checked my on-line manual. According to that, it's 44 for the ACC power and 45 for the Cig. Manual says 44 is a 7.5a but I'm pretty sure mine was a 10.

This is on the fuse panel on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel.

This 4Runner is not equipped with the 115V power source.
The 12V outlets both come off of the 15A PWR OUTLET fuse.
The 10A CIG fuse is for the "smokers mod" console that has a 12V outlet AND a cigarette lighter.

If the 12V console outlet isn't working, but the 12V rear outlet is, then either
a) you have a bad ground/connection to ground at the console outlet
b) the outlet itself is bad (likely due to poor/dirty contacts)

It's been a while since I've done it, but I think you can just pull the center console out, pull the center console plug, and then test for voltage directly at the plug. 12V and you know it's a bad outlet; 0V and it's likely a bad connection to ground.

Here are the wiring diagrams (from 2003 T4R) for 12V outlets and cigarette lighter.

OK, read this again and I'm confused.

OP: If you have the "smoker's package" you should have TWO 12 sockets in the center console. You should have a 12v "aux power" socket under a hinged lid, and the cigarette lighter.

The 12v Aux Power outlet is on the same circuit as the cargo area 12v outlet so if one of those works and the other one doesn't, it would have to be either the socket itself or the wiring to the socket.

OTOH, if the 12v power outlet in the console is working but the cig lighter is not, then the first thing to check would be the fuse on the cig lighter which is a different fuse from the aux power.

Thank you for al the input and schematics.

Today I checked the 10Amp cigarette lighter fuse and it was fine, 0-ohms resistance.

I then pulled back the console trim piece and disconnected the cigarette lighter wire. With the ignition on, my multimeter was showing 12V directly at the wire connector so I knew the culprit was the cigarette lighter receptacle.

I noticed that the receptacle had some contamination courtesy of the previous owner. I took it apart, cleaned all the surfaces and leads, put it back together and it's working again.

it looks like the culprit was contamination on the small lead (hot side) at the bottom of the receptacle.

Just for reference, my 4Runner has the cigarette lighter on the console. But it doesn't have any additional 12V Aux power.

Thanks again guys!
Luke
