The Truth About Bilstein 6112's and a V8 Engine

I'm starting this thread to hopefully get some clear information out there on how to get Bilstein 6112's to work better with a 4th gen V8 and added weight.

A complaint I have heard or read about a lot is that the Bilstein 6112 shocks with the bilstein spring don't provide enough lift, even when on the top perch. I struggled with this for a bit and finally decided to pull the trigger on some new springs and fix the problem.

Here's the original setup.... Bilstein 6112 Shocks up front with the Bilstein (most likely rebranded eibach) 600# coil spring. The spring is a 3" ID (for the 2.5" body) and measures 14" in length. I'm also running Icon UCA's. In the rear I have the Bilstein 5160 shocks with reservoirs and OME medium 2" lift springs. After installing this setup I was sitting at 38" in the rear (ground to fender), and between 35.5 and 36.5 in the front which gave me more rake that I wanted and of course had the driver side lean.

To fix this issue I purchased some King 14x3" 700# springs and a 3/8" spacer. These springs cost me about $150 from Poly Performance. I installed the new springs and left the driver side spring on the top perch (#6) and also placed the 3/8" spacer above the top hat. For the passenger side I placed the spring on the third perch from the top (#4). After allowing this to settle the measurements I got were an even 38" in the rear and an even 37" on the front end. This was perfect for me. I am OK with this amount of rake and think that it makes it look so much better, and as it should with this lift.
If anybody produced a 15" 700# spring I think that would be a great option on the 6112's... unfortunately it goes from 14" to 16" which is probably too long. If there was a 15" spring it would allow us to use the bottom perches and still get the same amount of lift, but with less preload.

So, there you have it! If you want to get better lift from your 6112's, some 14" 700# springs and a 3/8 spacer could be put to good use. This would be good with body armor as well. I currently have sliders and a steel front bumper.

Feel free to comment with questions, I'd be happy to help.

I ended up getting king 650# and have a 1/2” top out spacer. Driver is 6th perch and pax is 5th. I do have the metal tech rear coils. The driver side coil helps with the lean.
I think if I had an extra 1/2” of lift it would level it but I’m afraid to add anymore lift because I don’t want to bind up my cv axles.
If I end up getting a steel front bumper I will probably get a new front spring coil setup.

I don’t have a side view right now.

I’m off on my perch settings, I was thinking there are 7 but actually there 6. My driver is down 1 from the top and pax 2 from the top. Sorry for any confusion.
This is for the 6112’s paired with king 650# coils

This exactly why I didn't purchase the 6112's, no spring option. I wasn't going to fork out another 200 bucks for the correct weight spring.

While they don't offer anything other than a #600 with the 6112, they are sold separately from Eibach in different spring rates.

At least its available, but agree that it should be offered as a sku with the damper.

That said, I think it could have been a little stiffer at #620 instead of #600 as it's almost too plush when off-road even with a stock V6.

This is good info because I recently installed Icon 2.0 rears with OME 895e springs to get rid of the reverse rake I had with extra rear weight, and was considering these for the front. I was hoping they would be a good match valving wise for the Icons, but thought the springs might be a tad too soft with the V8. I don’t know what I’m running in front now, but it’s definitely higher than stock, and I have Bilstein yellow/blue shocks, so I’m assuming they are Tacoma shocks/springs. Wheel center to wheelwell is about 20 1/4”. Ideally I’d like to gain around an inch in front.

When I had the 6112’s with the coils they came with and .5” spacer it looked very good with my 895e, and the handling and off-road characteristics were great. I had 5160 rear shocks. I went with the metal tech long travel rear end which raised my rear 1”. That’s why I added the king 650 coils.

I have no problems with 700# 14” springs on the 2nd from the highest preload setting and a 175# ARB front bumper with my 6112s. Right at 2.5-3”.

The “leveled” when still look looks silly when driving because the nose naturally rises and gives a ridiculous reverse rake stance.

Thanks. If I’m understanding you correctly, you used the .5 spacer in lieu of using the preload settings of the shocks, and just left them at the lowest perch setting?

Never adjusted the 6112s

over 2" 3P/5D but like the idea of a 650lbs coil once the 600 lbs start sagging.

I was at the highest perch setting driver and down two perches passenger. The spacer went on top of the top plate. After I put in the new coils I lowered the driver one perch from the top and left the passenger in the same perch as before. I did it like that because the rear coils I have now help the driver lean.

Ok thanks, that makes sense.

So are you using the spacer on just the drivers side? Any complaints with the preload being at the top notch? Also, are you using 2" lift in the rear?
