Mods, please move this thread if its in the wrong place.

I was talking about dumping my 4R to get the most I can before the value really tanks and I said I would like better mpg.......

That's when someone snydley said to me today, "you don't buy a 4R for mpg, and if you can't afford it buy a Camry.....'

If anyone here feels that way, please see my scenario, (and I can afford it, just considering a different option)

I have owned my 2016 TRDP since Feb of 2016, and I have put 88410 miles on it as of today. Yes, 88k and probably 90k by next Monday. So that breaks down to 4911 gallons of gas at 18 mpg, for a total amount of fuel spent around $12k in 20 months. (another website tracked my mpg and it was around 18 when I stopped using it a few months ago)

Break down:

Owned for 20 months:
Mileage: 88410
4420 miles per month driven
245 gallons @$2.45 avg each month of ownership.

So, $601 a month in fuel. which is a $40 fill up every three days ish......

So, I ask all of you who say "I didn't buy a 4R for MPG and I don't care what the mpg is" how many of you would continue to drive a 4R if they had to fill up every three days and they needed the room of a 4R and a car would not work due to the cargo room needed?

Would you then care about the MPG?

I posed my avg fill-up frequency and dollar amount to this fella and his answer was he would have to ride a bike... lol

I don't understand your rant.

1. You bought a vehicle that is advertised to get 18-21 mpg.
2. It performs as advertised.
3. You drive a lot of miles so you buy a lot of gas.

Where's the rant?

The 4Runner is designed to not only go on road, but off road as well. It is one of a very few vehicles designed to do this, so there are additional compromises and one is efficiency. You knew this I'm sure.

If you want to get rid of it then I totally understand, but even if you get a Prius you are still going to be spending a ton for fuel.

Good luck. Best thing for you is probably a Highlander but it only gets about 20% better fuel economy. Nothing else will have the room of the 4runner unless you get a minivan.

Yes, it does everything as advertised, I know and thats why I bought it and I didn't say I wouldn't replace it with another 4R. Yes, I personally can afford the gas......

Prius/Lexus is too small, will not work with what I do for a living and a Subaru doesn't have the offload ability to get to where I need to go.

Just discussing options, i.e. Colorado ZR2 Diesel when the "comment" was made.

My point was more about a person who makes a snyde comment without knowing the whole story. I see those comments all the time but experienced it first-hand today from a "MR. know it all" that didn't know the fully story thought i was complaining like its the 4R's fault for not getting better mpg's.. its not the 4R or even a big issue, just a dude butting in with a rude comment.

It made me wonder how many people would end up driving something else if they had to fill up their 4R every 3 days and if they would make the same comment.
 
So, you drive approx. 150mi/day, need the cargo space, need the ability to go offroad, and want more mpg? A Colorado only get +1 mpg than the runner. Jeep GC diesel gets 22mpg, I dont think you can get better than that.
 
You get 18mpg? That's phenomenal, I'm stoked to hit 14 in my mostly city driving. My old juiced up Duramax gets 14. (Well, probably 12 when I haven't driven it in awhile. Damn thing feels like a giant drag car after driving my gutless runner.)

Curious: were you not driving that many miles before you bought the t4r? Either way, making the statement about not buying a t4r for gas mileage is not wrong. Don't take it personal, they were technically correct in stating that. Maybe it was delivered with a different connotation in the conversation, or maybe you took it out of context. Hopefully it was the latter.

As stated; driving that many miles will cost you quite a bit, no matter what you're in.

Sounds like you bought the wrong vehicle. What he said wasn't wrong. You don't buy a 4Runner as a commuter car. I would be jumping for joy if I got 18 mpg in my 4Runner.

I get where you're coming from. I do 600 miles a week on my commute. That's a fill up every 3 days if I'm OCD and careful. Fortunately I have the wife's 12 year old Camry to do that with now since I don't have to haul anything but my muscular buttocks to work (she drives my 07 Sierra locally). I can do 4 days in the Camry on roughly half the gas. The 4Runner has basically become a weekend toy. I can afford the gas if necessary, barely. But I want to keep the mileage down on it. I do marvel at the duallys and other trucks doing the same commute blowing by me at 70 - 75 mph with complete abandon.

I read this whole thread and what vehicle i would have recommended to you at the first. Would have been a honda fit(insane amount of cargo room for a small car, and good gas mileage). Then at the end, i would pretty much recommend a 4runner because of the cargo room and offroad ability. Now i have to ask though do you carry the cargo to all of these remote areas that you need the 4runner as a daily hauler? Or could you use something more fuel efficient as a work day vehicle to haul the cargo on road. And have the 4runner for offroad and fun?

I would get a wagon instead of an SUV if I was driving that much and still needed the cargo space. If only the Ford Fusion wagon was sold here in the US.
I would get maybe an older Mercedes E class wagon, those also came with a diesel option.
 
Am I the only on here that DID buy the 4R for the gas mileage??:lookout:

Coming from a pair of Jeep Wrangler Rubicons (one on 35s with 4.88s), and a lifted LC80, I'm happy with the fuel mileage. I've posted on here before, Ill average 20mpg to a tank on the highway. My Jeeps averaged closer to 15mpg and my LC80 closer to 14mpg.:cry2:
 
I've owned an is300 and a g37xs. Both averaged 17-18mpg and required premium. Oddly enough the 4Runner is cheaper on gas for me and averages 18.5 mpg mostly city and runs o regular. I even owned my IS300 when gas prices were near $5 for premium and it didn't stop me. Sometimes you have to pay to play.

I fill up each week as much as you. It's a lot but I love the 4runner and I want to go off-road. My 5th gen is actually my second 4rnr. Wouldn't consider anything else. That is probably why you got the snyde comment. Some of us are just super fan boys.
 
Forget mpg. I wouldn’t drive a trd pro that many miles per month based on driving dynamics alone.

Can you write off lease payments? Maybe lr disco diesel? Mid 20s on the hwy and like 700 miles range.

Or be smart and get a crv. Huge cargo capacity and great mpgs.
