Changing to metal oil canister.
Amazon has a metal Toyota oil canister that replaces the plastic ones on our 4runners for under $30. Dealer wanted $130!
The middle tube must be changed but can you remove the old tube from the plastic one and place it in the metal or will I have to buy a new one?
Those of you that have the metal one do you like it?

You can swap the tubes over - I like it, does not function any better or worse but I get to brag about it in my signature along with floor mats

Hey SR5Owner,, I have the Toyota metal can w/extended tube, the Danti oil filter wrench, and 6 Toyota filters I will sell ya for 60$ + actual shipping. The can has been through 2 oil changes. I switched to spin on via Baxter Performance and am getting rid of the Toyota parts.

The tube that comes in the metal can is to short, that is why you have to swap it with the plastic cans part. The metal can is actually for a Highlander which uses a shorter filter.

Thanks for the offer but I bought 10 filters from Amazon for $44 and I already have a nice wrench.

Does it allow you to run a larger filter?

Nope. That is another reason I went to the spin-on adapter. Allows me to run a Fram XG16 Ultra-Syn filter with a displacement of 38.82 in³.. That and a much easier oil change and 20K mi filter life. Compare that to the YZZA5 filter with a displacement of 18.52 in³.

Thank you for making my point. I will be looking at the adapter you mentioned. :-)

Point to remember,, spin-on adapter will not work with factory skids, not enough clearance. I have RCI AL skids and they provide plenty of clearance.

Seems like a lot of work for once a year 10K OCI.

Had to post a link to this, thanks Zonzin. Very tempting, of course this most likely voids the warranty. You can't fart in car anymore and not void some warranty.

It ain't cheap. This is the spin on...

Sorry to hijack but would love to know how much clearance? I have the RCI aluminum skids also...If that aluminum skid was to pushed in from a rock hit or whatever, would it contact the filter?? Would the remote adapter be better?? Thanks, and again sorry for the hijack but it's not worth separate thread.

Well what was a lot of work was fighting that cartridge filter and the mess it always created. No matter how hard I tried I ended up with oil everywhere. I also change oil at 5k as I tow a trailer regularly.
The spin-on adapter was a piece of cake to install and I already had aftermarket skids. This was actually one of the cheaper mods I have done and produced one of the greatest benefits, easy oil changes, lower frustration and blood pressure.
