Takata recall: The airbag deaths that sparked massive action

I got rid of my Acura because of this reason. Initially it was just the passenger side and then it turned into the driver side. I was concerned if some jackass were to crash into me that my wife/ brother/ father would get killed due to metal pieces projecting from the inflation of the failing component.

I buy a Toyota and here we are again with this issue. I do not understand that the Takata airbags have been an issue since the early 2000s and it still has not been rectified. If the 6th gen has these shitty Takata airbags then what kind of "care" does Toyota/ auto industry have for us? Years they have seen deaths of their consumers and still decide to contact the same facility to produce more products for their safety components?

Shed some light on this for me.

You dont need to get rid of the vehicle. There is a recall. They will replace the faulty inflator free of charge. Happened to me in my Subaru LGT Wagon. I got it replaced, free of charge, no issues. Now with the 4Runner, it seems the recall is only for 2010-2016.

Overreact much? It's a recall, you don't have to get rid of your vehicle. Go in and they'll fix it for free. I don't think I know a single car nowadays that doesn't have some sort of recall. Guess it's easier to let us consumers test the cars for them.

To OP's point, it continues to head this way because people continue to purchase cars from manufacturers that deal with bad vendors. I don't think it's an overreaction to point a finger at Toyota. In fact, I think this sub chronically under-reacts to anything Toyota does wrong. Takata has been garbage for years. Toyota should never have been using them in the first place. They knew people would potentially die over a faulty air bag and they said nothing until they legally had to. I'm not selling my truck over it, but it'll be a factor when I'm making a decision on my next purchase.

Unfortunately my car has not made the cut off at 2017. No recall that I can implement a this time but I am sure after the cars that have been taken care of they will then increase the recall further and include the rest of us 2017-2019. I can not find any information on what inflator was used past 2016.. I assume they didn't change anything.

The US is laid back in their delivery of this kind of news while other countries like Australia specifically directs their consumers to stop driving these cars. Places with higher humidity are at a higher risk for spontaneous failure/ sudden death. Thats crazy

Mine is at the cut off. Driving a death trap until were part of the recall.

the reason it didn't get fixed immediately is because of the scale of the problem, this was a major supply chain issue there simply wasn't anyone who could immediately fill the orders as a replacement.

toyota could have communicated this better (i know i was surprised when i learned my 2016 was impacted, i assumed they had fixed the problem since it had been a known issue for awhile at the time)

i know with the initial round of 4runner recalls there were problems with getting parts, but so far it sounds like replacements are going well from the few people I know who had appointments saturday or today.

lol, you're going to sell your vehicle for nothing. if you are driving a 2017 you don't even have a bad airbag, they changed parts mid 2016 production cycle

Toyota Provides Update on Takata Air Bags in New Vehicles | Toyota
PLANO, Texas, September 2, 2016 - Toyota will phase out the use of Takata frontal air bag inflators in production of new vehicles that contain phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant without a drying agent (“desiccant”) by the end of October 2016.

The only U.S.-market Toyota/Lexus vehicles currently in production receiving Takata frontal PSAN air bag inflators without desiccant are the early production 2017 model year Lexus GX 460 and 2016 model year Toyota 4Runner.

Models that may be in dealer inventory at this time equipped with Takata frontal PSAN air bag inflators without desiccant are:
2015 model year Lexus IS 250C/350C
2015 model year Scion xB
2015 and 2016 model years Lexus GX 460
2015 and 2016 model years Toyota 4Runner
2017 model year Lexus GX 460
Note, these are all frontal passenger air bag inflators.

Importantly, these non-desiccated Takata passenger frontal PSAN air bag inflators in these new vehicles are not subject to a current recall.

Based on multiple independent investigations and NHTSA’s independent expert, NHTSA has concluded that non-desiccated frontal Takata air bag inflators do not pose an unreasonable risk to safety until they reach a certain level of propellant degradation after long-term exposure to environmental moisture and fluctuating high temperatures. NHTSA and Takata are prioritizing recalls of these components based on when the involved inflators are likely to pose an unreasonable risk to safety, considering time, temperature and environmental moisture, which depends on a vehicle’s operating location. According to NHTSA’s current order, these components will be recalled by the end of 2018.

You already have the replacement airbag inflaters, so it's not unfortunate.

I can see from your point of view that this may look like overreacting. Depending on how YOU read it. I wrote it in a relaxed but yet concerning manner. If you felt a feeling of overreacting thats because its how you reacted to the post, internally.

Anyhow, and unfortunately, you do not see the point of this thread. I am merely bringing more awareness to this situation and in hopes to get people to be proactive rather than reactive. Some see this recall as "My air bag needs to be replaced and I'll get to it eventually". When in fact its a life or death decisions my friend. This issue with Takata is not new and I wonder why after decades of this companies shit we are still putting their deadly components in our cars man. Its a simple wtf is Toyota/ auto industry doing?

If you want to see another "check out my new bumper" thread I can make that happen too but those are a dime a dozen. Even though, I don't mind seeing them.

Mine was built in 10/16. This is 2019. They don't seem to be in a hurry - at least not as much of a hurry as they were when they cashed my check.

My wife is having surgery this Wednesday and I'll make an appointment as soon as she recovers. I'll bet a whole dollar they'll have some excuse, waiting list, or whatnot and it won't be done until spring or summer.

Seems that 2017 and above are not part of the recall and that sheds some of the light that I was asking for. Thank you. I was not able to find that.

Still does not explain that after 2 decades of deaths that they are still putting this companies reputation into cars. Does it take 20 years to realize this? They recalled cars and then put the same crap in the new models only to be recalled years later. Why do we have these proven deathly components in a 2016 car? In reality who knows if there will be another recall on the later years. Theres no guarantee.

This has been such a long ongoing issues in cars you would think that QA would be a forced issue on this company. You would think that someone else would have seen the need for quality airbags and started making bank!

As for your ride, if you want to get rid of the thing I will be glad to take it off your hands and take it in when a recall arises as we both know it will eventually happen.

By the way the recall takes 3 hours it was a fun morning.

My dealer had the part delivered within a week of me calling to set up the appointment. There are no "waiting lists" for warranty airbags as far as I know.

they recalled the older ones first. shouldn't be any delay some are even getting same day appointments

My dealer replaced mine expeditiously. Called them mid last week, they ordered the part then installed it Saturday. No mess, no fuss.

I think Toyota totally fawked this one up. They knew a long time ago that ammonium nitrate could cause a problem in the long run. And did nothing about it - for a long time.

But... the sky isn't falling. Ammonium Nitrate takes a long time to become volatile enough to be dangerous. There is practically no risk within the first few years. It takes more like 20 years to degrade with humidity and temperature changes into a more volatile compound that can then cause the rapid expansion that leads to metal housing failures.

They should be replaced. Toyota should not have sold them when they knew of the danger. People died (I don't know if any were actually in Toyota vehicles). But that doesn't mean that the current airbags are currently dangerous. They should not be any more dangerous than any other airbag for a long time. But they also should be replaced as soon as possible.
