Talk me out of 255/80R17s??

Yep, fits in the spare tire location with no problem. I have KDSS and it's a little tight, but fits perfectly without rubbing. Non-KDSS 4Runners have more room, so no problem either way.

What are those tires you have on?
The existing tires are the the factory installed 20" P245/60R20. No longer an issue though as I cancelled the order for the Limited and bought a TRD Off-Road Premium expecting delivery mid-April.

You can easily do this with chalk

Been using similar technique for decades of driving in deep soft sand. The bigger the footprint the better but you can go too low and not gain footprint, but make you more susceptible to loosing a bead seal.

This works for radials

Load the vehicle, including passengers, as it will be in the sand.

Using chalk test, determine pressure for street driving.

Measure the height from pavement to bottom of rim.

Lower pressure until the height is 3/4 of street pressure height.

Note front and rear pressure can be different in both cases, so best to measure each.

TOYO Open Country AT3 255/80 17

TOYO Open Country AT3's, LOVE them in this size. Handle better and feels lighter in the steering, road noise is reduced from my WildPeaks, and SOOOO much better in snow and ice than the WildPeaks. Still a very small about of rubbing on the passer side in reverse, need a BMC. Yeah, wider looks cooler I guess, but I am sold on cookie cutters.

PROS:
1. Drivability
2. My gas milage actually went up a little
3. Able to deflate to 18-20 psi with no concerns
4. Great in winter
5. With my SCS wheels, pretty close to stock weight combined
6. Tall for clearance
7. Quiet
8. Wearing great
9. Balanced no issue, no road force balance needed
10. Fit in the spare location

CONS:
1. A regear might be in my future, highway mostly. Just a little too much gear hunting here in Colorado

This is great to hear about the Toyo AT3. I'm considering these over the Wildpeaks as my next tire in 255/80. Is the rubbing a result of the wheels?

The rubbing is so slight is has to be the wheels. Many others with stock wheels have zero rubbing

New tires are on!

Finally got the new tires on, and went with 255/80 Nitto Ridge Grapplers.

They measure in at about 33.25 inches in diameter and other than having to push the front fender liner forward by about 1/2 in, they fit great, and no rubbing at all. At least with the little bit I played around. Later on I'll get to some proper trails and disconnect the sway bars, but I think it is going to be in the clear..

THey ride pretty smooth and are actually much quieter than the blizzaks I run in the winter... I'm quite pleased...

Did you replace spare and did it fit in factory place underneath? The grapplers in this size are now available in my area so I am ordering today or tomorrow.
