New fine-grained VSC OFF Mod for V6 1GR

OK! I have my OEM switch, the OEM connector, Kliv's device, and a few questions for those who have done this mod...

> Where do a get the terminal clips that connect to the wires that snap into the white OEM connector? I was thinking about using female spade connectors directly on the switch, but would like to use that connector.

> I'm a little nervous about getting the dash panels off. What's the best method? Do I just pull straight back? Pry the pieces out? After I remove screws, of course.

It is simpler than you think. Just pull it. There is nothing you can break doing that.

Something like that. Soldering is highly recommended to avoid poor contact.

Yah I soldered the connections and used heat shrink where possible and tape everywhere else. I'm far from being professional but after I tape a spice I like to zip-tie it or the bundle of wires right at it just to prevent the tape from unraveling in the summer heat. Just make sure you cut the zip-tie flush so it doesn't cut into any other wires.

It's probably overkill but its better than underkill :)
 
I am glad to announce that we improved the mod!

What's new?

- It is smaller! 30mmx30mm.
- It is factory made now what allowed us to use other components and get 4 times bigger margin of the load. No great need but still sweet.
- Pluggable connector with wires.
- Quality increased from 200% to 300% :D
- No changes in algorithms.

We installed one of new items locally. Works great. Will send one item to CO today. Hope to get feedbacks.
 
D'oh! Looks like I ordered too soon! Might have to sell mine and get the new one... hmmm.

Don't sell your unit right now! You will be able to sell it as "old school hand-made limited edition" to collectors later on with double price! :D

I'm having a hard time finding the parts I need to use the factory switch (84988-35070) and connector (90980-10933)... I'm not finding any female terminals that will work in that factory connector.

I've been all over the web, even trying to decipher Japanese websites, and it looks like Toyota has something called "terminal repair kits", but I can't determine if that's what I'm looking for. I'm trying to do a "clean" install... any suggestions?

Can I use this switch? I have a bunch of these types of switches in my truck already and wanted to keep the theme going.

Hi Kliv,

I'm still planning on doing this mod, but had to invest in some new tires & do the 100K service, so I'm a little low on funds at this point. Not to mention, I think I'm going to have to get a front spacer lift for the front since I upsized my tires to 265/70/17's and there's a little tire rub at full lock. It looks like I'll probably be looking at doing this more toward late spring (plus then it'll be warm out when I do it). So I'll just deal with vsc until then, although, we haven't had but about 1-2" of snow at any one time this year, with temps in the mid 30's to 40 lately. (so no snow cover whatsoever right now)

It sounds like everyone is having great success with this mod, I'm looking forward to getting it done too!

I finally have all of the parts that I wanted for the switch installation... hope to get to it this weekend. I had the switch and connector, but it took me a while to find the right wire terminals that fit in the connector housing. Toyota calls them a "terminal repair" kit. You can also buy the switch harness, but that was even more expensive than these little wires. $6.00 each for the wires ($24.00 total) versus $32 for the harness. It's worth it to me to have this connection perfect. The wires are very nice, for what it's worth. Here's a picture with all of the part numbers in case anyone else is looking.

It's not just the connectors... there's 6" of really nice wire factory crimped to each connector! ;-)

Kliv. Plese hit me up with the information to forward you money and all the specs of how much you need and what not. I will be gathering all the parts I need. Not that I NEED this mod....It just sounds like fun. So let me ask, this does NOT turn my 2004 v8 4wd into a 2wd does it? If so, that is evern better. It will jut allow the tires to spin when I want? Thank you!
 
How are you guys stripping sections of these tiny wires to splice into them? Just working carefully at them with a razor blade?

I was thinking about cutting the wires, stripping the ends (have to find a small wire stripper), twisting all three ends together, and soldering, but I don't know this stuff.
 
Having the right tools makes all the difference on a job like this. I pretty much have the whole thing planned out (routing of wires, locations of connections, and where the device will be secured), but want to make sure that I can create quality connections.

This mod will NOT make your truck 2wd, but will allow you spin the tires :). If you are not so interested in offroading, it will give you some fun at least.

To summarize, for the installation you will require:
1. The Unit
2. Momentary button (84988-35070 if you like FJ button)
3. Connector for the button (90980-10933 for FJ) and 4 terminals that type: Home » Shop » Connectors / Harnesses » Sumitomo » Injector Connector Terminal (22 - 16 gauge) [heat resistant copper alloy]
You may use 4 repair kits found by Doozi (28998-12340).
4. 1-2 m of wire.
5. 2+ hours (depending on how quick you are)
6. minimal set of tools
7. (Optional) 2 cans with beer
