Photos of 4th Gen ARB bumper

EDIT - Someone on another forum pointed out that my lack of photography skills was making the ARB look larger than it really is. I took some different photos using his advice, and now present some much better pics. (BELOW)

Here are some photos of the production version of the ARB bull bar for the 4th Gen 4Runner.

It took me longer to install this bumper than it took me to install my Daystar lift by myself. The instructions ARB sent were good, but there were just lots of little details to work out.

You might notice a few things, including:

1. The fog lights are not the IPFs. Instead of paying over $300 for a set of IPF fog lights that won't do much, I decided to pay $55 for a set of Pilot fog lights that won't do much. The ARB bar has some sort of proprietary mounting system for the IPF's but it only took a small measure of redneck ingenuity to get the Pilots to fit okay.

2. The inner fender liners were trimmed a bit, but I also took a torch and heated the plastic to the point of bending easily, and then bent them inward so there wouldn't be any rough edges showing,

3. On the 2003-2005 models (but not 2006), the ARB has a gap between the bumper and the grille. ARB advises us to cut up the original plastic bumper, but I didn't have the desire to chop up a pristine OEM part. Instead, I took a piece of vinyl drip guard for gutters and made the gap filler for less than $4.

Outstanding! Thanks for the detailed photos.

Do you notice the added weight difference at all during driving, ie. braking, turning... It's what, 150 - 200 lbs or so?

It is light weight in comparison to overall weight of 4Runner but it is in front of axles - just curious of your impressions so far.

I didn't have a method of weighing it, so no idea there...

Driving - the weight is not that noticeable. Ride and braking are about the same. I can feel the added weight when accelerating. The change in rake is the main thing I noticed. The front end sits about 3/4 to 1 inch lower than before, and this is detectable from the driver's seat. (I have a Daystar 2.5 inch lift)

One major thing for me to get used to is being able to see the bumper from the driver's seat. It's like driving around while looking through crosshairs. :gun:

my tjm-17 for the 3rd gen weighs 70 pounds. i would say that weighs no more than 115lbs. the -17 has no hoops

I don't know how much these are selling for but here is one listed on EBAY

Nah, that's a bit too high at $1140. I paid $995 shipped for mine from Sam's Off-Road.

Once you take off the part off the bumper you need to take off....Can you put that part back on if you wanted to sell your car. Im worried about resale for my 4runner.

IIRC, the only things that I permanently modified would be the plastic fender liners. They would definitely not be able to be used again. However, new ones can be purchased for about $70 each (x2).

I did not cut the original bumper like the instructions said to do - I made a gap filler from something less expensive.

So, yeah, I think you could go back to stock if you wanted, as long as you didn't mind buying new fender liners and you had lots of room to store all the parts you took off.

that is a nice look to the 4th gen

wish my Taco ARB bumper for 3rd gen had that fog light cut out.

Nice pics and good looking ride

Sorry to jump such an old thread-but just noticing how a lot of you 4th gens are over here in off roading stuff section and most of us 3rd gens are not.....

good to see the 4th gen is just as off road capable-if only they came with the manny tranny....

Is there anyway someone with the ARB bumper can take a photo from the drivers seat so we can get an idea what it looks like from inside the truck?

Thanks!

You will have to re-wire your current turn signals and splice the existing wires to the new blinker housing. Even if you don't know what your doing, it should take 30 min to do.

Wing guards

My only complaint so far about this bumper is the lack of "wing" plates underneath the sides of the bumper.

You need to trim the Inner Fender Well Liner (IFWL) to fit, however once you do, the forward part of the IFWL has nothing to anchor to... it’s a big gaping hole that flaps around in the wind.

Of greater concern is the possibility of water going into the intake causing hydro lock. On the passenger side (right side) fender, right above your tire is the air-box inlet. If you go through fairly deep water or a very large puddle, that water will splash between your bumper and IFWL subsequently channeling water directly into your intake. Technically your air-filter and box should stop the water and drain it before it truly reaches your throttle-body but in creek depth of water, I really don’t want to take that chance.

Beyond the possibility for water issues, the back of the bumper lights and wiring is exposed which, while trail riding, may snag and rip out lighting components. Additionally, the washer-fluid reservoir is exposed to potential trail damage. A metal “wing” plate that bolts in to fill the gap would alleviate all of those issues.

In my research, I have found that ARB did include those “wing” plates when they first produced the bumper, but after contacting their rep last week (Aug/2015), ARB no longer includes them in packaging. Additionally, I have not been able to locate aftermarket sources.

I am planning on getting some sheet metal and cut/bending it to fit that space, drilling holes in the bumper “trim” to anchor it and then fitting some Kydex between the IFWL and the plate to keep things even and splash resistant.

Beyond those complaints, it does wiggle when you go over bumps, but man is it solid. I was looking for something that I could hit a deer at 80mph and blow the thing to bits as opposed to a soccer-mom bumper that crumples in after being struck by a run-away shopping cart. I can report that I’ve rammed a bunch of stuff with this bumper and it works awesomely!

^I may have a fix for your "wing" issue. I bought a set from ARB for a 2012 FJ ARB bumper but sold the truck a few months later. I still have the unopened box sitting in my basement. I'm not sure if they'll fit but it's worth a shot.

ARB look,

Someone asked what it looks like from the inside looking out with these ARB bumpers; while this doesn't really give you the full effect of the overall look, hopefully this helps.
Oh, and try not to judge my Acura... she's old and 400,000 miles... I know, put her to pasture... sheesh :sorry:

Sam's off road? I must have checked the wrong web site because I didn't see them listing any at all for 4runners? I did find it for $same on another site so no biggee. Did you have to buy the plastic insert for the turn signals? Did you buy the turn signals? From where? Please help, nobody posts jack squat about the turn signals and the web sites selling these things tell nothing in the descriptions thanks!
