I changed my 'runners oil at 1500 mi. Wanted to do it at 1000, but a road trip took care of that. I'll now change the 5-30 Mobil 1 at 5000 mi intervals.
I changed it myself, and true to Toyota form, the process was simple. The little things Toyota does really makes a difference...ie. there are hooks on the somewhat heavy front skid pan that allow you to hang it, instead of holding it up while you are trying to get the 4 bolts back in. Also, the rear skid plate does not have to be removed. There is a removable plastic cover to allow acess to the drain plug.
I used the regular Toyota filter, and do not see what the big issue is with it. It doesn't have a anti-drain back valve, but my dealer said you only need that when the filter is mounted as it is in the V6. Besides, if Toyota says it ok to use the 4 dollar Toyota filter, then you won't have a warranty issue.
