What I think we are overlooking, is the type of oem hitch he has. As I recall, the V6 uses the lighter duty hitch that is bolted only to the rear crossmember (not the frame rails). This is why it is not recomended for any type of weight distribution hitch system. The V8 hitch is fully mounted to both of the main frame rails, and much stronger. For normal pulling, which doesn't go over the 5K rating, you should be OK, but 'jerking' with a chain or non-expanding strap could result in bending the weaker crossmember the hitch is mounted to.
Don't forget there is a safety factor built into the 5k rating, I'd bet you could pull 15k before you saw any failure. Also, often the only differance between a V6 model and a V8 model in towing capacity is the HP and drivetrain to get it moving and keep it moving, not the physical mount componants, I dont know if this is true for Toyota but other vehicles it is.
