08' 4runner SR5 4x4 issue?

I've had the same difficulty trying to go directly into 4L. However when going into 4H first, THEN putting it in N and into 4L works like a charm every time.

It just seems like it shouldn't be grinding like that, I have my truck scheduled to go in tomorrow morning

I have an 08 limited and ran into the same issue with the grind. However, it was my fault as I was engaging the 4x4 wrong. As a few others have pointed out you must first be fully engaged in 4H first. Once 4H is fully engaged you can then stop, go into neutral and switch into 4L. If you try and go directly for 2H to 4L without engaging 4H it will grind. You should also be fully engaged in 4L before you start to drive off or it will grind.

That is once you transition from 4H to 4L, while still stopped and in neutral, wait till the lights on the dash stop blinking and you are fully in 4L before switching back into drive from neutral. If you start to drive off while the 4L lights are blinking you may get some grind. If, while stopped, it does not engage 4L after a few seconds, switch back to 4H, put it into drive and roll a few feet forward. Then stop and go back into neural and tray going into 4L again.

Don’t worry about the grind, when I changed my transfer case / differential oils they were clean, no metal at all.

So the dealership can do nothing to fix this grind? I have a warranty and wouldn't mind taking it in, but if its pointless I will not take it in.

I just took my truck around the block and I still get a beep/blink/grind. Starting out in neutral, I went to 4H first, made sure it was engaged, then put the truck in 4L, I sat there for 3 minutes waiting for it to engage but the blink wouldn't go away, I even tried backing up a few feet but still nothing... I put the truck in drive and GRIIIIIIIND... So frustrating..

Did you try coasting in N for a few feet after you selected 4lo (without putting it R or D)?

Dasanii19,
Sorry, I realize that in my post it seems that I am saying not to worry at all. :moping:

Just to clarify myself, when I said don’t worry about the grind I meant to say don’t worry if it only happened a few times but is generally working correctly.

Having said that, it sounds like yours is not engaging at all in which case a trip to the dealer would be in order.

:iagree: 100%

Cool, ill take it in then. I don't see it being normal to coast only to get it to go into 4L, I mean what if I was in a bank of snow and couldn't coast? It doesn't make sense to me.

I really do appreciate the input, ill post up my findings.
