08 Sport Tire Size Upgarde on OEM Wheel Questions.....

First of all, this is post number 2 here. Outside of my intro post, this is it. Really glad I found this place, the knowledge here is impressive! I've searched my questions, gotten some ideas but nothing definitive, so I'm coming here for an assist from you guys.

I have a 2008 Sport Edition. I love everything about it, other than the fact that the small tires make it more practical for picking kids up from soccer practice rather than running trails. I am hoping to upgrade the size of my tires, while, for now, keeping the OEM wheels. My budget is limited. Now I've read about lifts and spacers, I've seen the kick ass mods you guys have done and some day, that might be a route I try...but for now this is what I'd like to do. For the life of me I can't figure out tire sizing to save my life. What will fit my rig without mods and on my OEM wheels is beyond me.

The tires on my rig now are 265/65R/17. I snagged a photo from a guy on here (his photo is below) who said he upgraded under identical circumstances to these 265/70R/17:

The wheels in the photo are the same as on my rig, but with an upgraded size tire. As you can see, they fit nicely, I believe without any mods. Can I go bigger than these or would that be a mistake?

I also saw an FJ at my Toyota dealer with a nice set of tires that were BFG 265/75R/16. Now how these differ, I don't know....but would they also fit my rig without mods? What I'd really like is a little more height and definitely a little more width, with a trial style tread.

What are my best options? And thanks for hearing me out and another question that may have been asked many times before.

Use this tire calculator to determine the metric tire sizes as they relate to standard. Then search who else has run the tire size. If you stay close to 32" tires you will not have any issues with fitment, i.e. 265/70R17 or 265/65R17 are examples. From what I can gather you would like 265/70R17 these tires a bit bigger, and will fit with no additional lift required.

What's the difference in the 265/70R17's v. the 265/65R17? Just the height from the wheel edge to the tread? Is there any ability to stick with the OEM wheels and upgrade the width a little as well as the height?

Would the set up on that FJ I saw even work? BFG 265/75R/17's? I honestly can't tell from the link you posted.

depending on tire brands, 265/70/17s are about 31.7 or 9, 265/75/17s are around 32.6, the width is about the same on both. imo, stick with the 70s, u may still get rubbing & have to trim some, without a lift, the 75s wont work unless u go with a skinnier tire, like say 255/75/17 & or lift it first. u long story short, stick to around 32in.tires without a lift, 265/70/17 is most likely the largest u can go without trimming, 255/75/17 will work without a lift & no wheel spacers, but will be narrower than u want. hope this helps a bit

Hey guys....I have read about every thread I can find, and I've been researching tires/wheels for a few weeks. As with 5POINT56, I plan on upgrading from my '07 SE's 265/65R17s. I am pretty sure that I will go with 265/70R17s that are listed as 31.7 in diameter on an 8 inch wheel. My question is whether I could upgrade to a wider wheel without a lift or major trimming. I am looking at a few wheels and have options of 17x8, 17x8.5, and 17x9. Does anyone know if 17x9 will cause issues? I can live with some reasonable trimming. I don't want to use spacers, and I'm trying to get my wheels out from inside my fender wells. Any suggestions?

I'm running 255/75/17 BFG M/T's on my stock 08 SR5. They fit well, are much taller, and ride much better than the factory Michelins. I still average better than 20 mpg.

i didnt want to use spacers either , so i went with aftermarket 8.5 wheels, 1 in over stock size & the wheels are right at the end of the fender,perfect for me, just make sure u get the correct offset & backspacing.

I really was hoping for both more height and more width. I know based on my keeping the OEM wheels, my choices are limited, but it looks like there is no way to add even modest width....just a slight amount height.

Anyone have a photo of a T4R with 265/70R17's?

I've looked through the Lifts & Tires thread....seemed hard to find anything without a lift and on OEM wheels. Maybe I missed some. That other link is helpful though, seeing the complete TR4 in the photo helps to judge scale.
