$1,100 For CV Boot?!

Dealer quoted leaking CV boot on my 04 at $1,100. WTF? New boot and clamps can't be more than $100; is the labor worth a grand? if so I'm in wrong business if mechanics work cost that much. If axle has to be removed then I'll let it go till it fails and replace a damn thing with remanufactured and life time warranty unit from NAPA or such. What do you all think? Any suggestions?

I've heard good things about CVJ's products but I've read that they are significantly more expensive if you don't have an OEM axle to return as a core. I don't think mine are OEM anymore or I'd use them.

Wouldn't waste my money or time with that mechanic anymore. I have seen some diy's floating around here somewhere. Seems like a weekend job for the not so mechanically inclined. If you know what you're doing, you could get it done in a day.

According to FJ forum this job will take about half a day and there are things I would need to rent such as slide hammer and 35 mm socket. Does the vehicle need an alignment after this type of job? Local mechanic will do it for half of Toyota's quote but still pricey for me. Thanks for all input.

No alignment required. You don't need slide hammer, just a brass punch to knock it out/in, long breaker bar, large socket 35/36mm, optionally pliers to bend new clamps.
It's a messy job as the axle/tripod should be cleaned out. It took me half a day to do a passenger side.

My first time I rented a axle puller from Autozone and used a large clamp to secure it to the axle. That was the instruction in a post I was using. Now I take a large flat screwdriver and 4 pound sledge to knock it out. You only have to knock it out enough to get the c clamp ring free.

To be fair, i use impact wrench and I have done this about 8 times but it is not a bad job. I have it down to less than an hour but 2 hours should be max for a novice.
It is not technical, you just need to watch what you are doing, like anything else you do on your vehicle.
