1/9/19 - Toyota Expands Takata Air Bag Safety Recall : 2010-2016 4Runners

I got mine done yesterday. It took about 3.5 hours. But I just noticed the dashboard is sloping towards the drivers side now. Big hole between the trim and the dash. I guess I'm due for a return trip tomorrow. I probably would have noticed at the dealership and made them fix it when I picked it up, but my 3 year old was having a meltdown because he wanted to keep the Tacoma they gave to me for the afternoon!

This is so damn frustrating to see over and over again. Can Toyota really not handle a recall without causing further damage?

This scares me too. I'm afraid of the tech scratching plastic or not getting panels to fit properly. Then again, I'm also afraid of having shrapnel explode in my face.

Yep. I'm torn about pursing this yet.

I don't want my shit messed up, nor do I want any new rattles or whatever. I too, also don't want a bomb in my dashboard though.

Took mine in and only took just over an hour. Cannot tell anyone was in the truck. I did make sure the tech had a warm breakfast sandwich in the passenger seat though :)

Anyone have access to Toyota's repair documents for this? I'm still curious if I should remove the aftermarket stereo before taking it in. I guess it's easy enough to ask a service advisor, though I trust service advisors only slightly more than the person who sold me the truck :)

says to refer to the Toyota TIS for full procedure. But the pdf cites torque values for all the fasteners in the various exploded view drawings.

Based on all the exploded views, looks like they have to pull the entire dash, including the steering wheel, centre console, parts of the door trims to slide the dash out.

If Toyota is only covering 3 hours labor on these recalls, that is a tough 3 hours.

I'd cringe extra hard for those who have aftermarket stereos, custom gauges and mounts installed everywhere... amps/sound processors hidden inside the dash etc...

I was about to install an Alpine Halo9 stereo too. But I had to get a rear 3/4 side window replaced as my 4runner was broken into in the weekend. When I dropped it off at the dealer, they said... "oh you have a recall on your 2015 limited". I said is it airbag? Adviser says yup and I said, I got the letter 1.5 years ago about it, and to wait until parts are available. "Do you actually have all the parts you need". He said. "One sec, rings up 2 people, "Yup. Want a loaner?"

Going to pick it up tomorrow. Glass job was supposed to be 2 hours. See if they finished the airbag too... I left it with them at 8am today.

One more thing... Do we actually get revised/new design inflators? Or are they the same ammonium nitrate inflators that left the factory and we are going to be needing to have inflators changed out every X years?

From what I understand, a recall has to be a permanent fix. Good info on the procedure - my guess is that techs have found much faster/easier ways to carry out the repair after doing so many of them. I'll probably talk to a service advisor and see what I should remove or disconnect before taking it in.

Got mine done yesterday. With an oil change and tire rotation added, the total time was 4 hours in service. I tried to get a loaner car but the service adviser told me that Toyota does not allow that on recall work...Luckily they offer free shuttle service and dropped off/picked me up at my house (wife was working all day). Don't see any damage or issues with my vehicle afterwards, so that's good!

Toyota of Huntington Beach took just two hours to do the recall and change my oil filter (tangent story). Everything looks good - no damage.

Mine was at Elmore Toyota for 3.5 hours for only the airbag... the service advisor said it was a 3 hour minimum job... even though I plead my case that Toyota's website says it takes an hour lol (also knowing that most of you all had it done in about an hour) :noidea:

I've always had great service there for the 14 years I owned my Tundra. If you are short on time and need a quick turn around I wouldn't go there for the airbag recall though. At least they gave me a rental since I had my two young kids with me.

My service advisor told me Toyota billed it out as a 3 hour job, and the quicker they can get it done, the better it was for the mechanics (can make more money). Mine took pretty much the whole time, but guess it just depends on how many the mechanics did before and how well they are at it.

Toyota pays us 3 hours to do it but most techs can get it done in about 1-1.5 hours. Remember that the car doesn't get worked on right away when it comes in whether you have an appointment or not. Every tech will rather take cash jobs then recalls but this one actually pays decent for what it is.

Also depends how many techs in the shop are certified to do it

I was told it is a complete redesign, new wires, new actuator, and a new propellant (not ammonium nitrate).

Just picked mine up from getting done. Dropped it off at 8am and they called me at 2 to tell me that they did there 100 point service check and tried to get me to do rear brakes, front struts, all the filters. Told them no, just do recall. Got truck back at 4pm. I have the extended warranty which got me a loaner car for the day.

For what it's worth, they fixed the issue in about an hour. Everything is aligned now, no rattles, no dash damage and the airbag is safe. It's worth to make sure it's not going to be dangerous in years to come.

Hopefully the tech got it and not the porter!

False. Toyota is covering loaners/rentals. Unless I have a very generous dealership willing to cover the cost of customer rentals.
