LOL, this thread has been quite insightful, albeit not about oil. I'll continue to change my oil at no more than 5,000 mile intervals. Thank you.
On my way to pick up my new TE from having POR15 applied to the undercarriage; a three day process and I'm anxious to pick it up. Next week I'll be taking it across the border to Sarnia, Ontario to have the nearest Krown application center apply its product to the inside of the doors, panels, tailgate and frame.
As I concluded in a previous post, to each his own.

Ok since we're back on topic. As everyone has said, it's really personal preference as to how often to change your oil. I use conventional oil in all my vehicles. I do change the oil in my older vehicles every 3,000-4,000 miles.
As I have done with ALL my vehicles, I perform the first oil change at 1,000 miles and then every 3,000-4,000 miles. With my newer vehicles (2010 & 2011) I did change the oil at 1,000 miles but with today's engine designs and tolerances and today's oil technology, is it safe to go to changing the oil every 5,000 miles?
Again this is using conventional oil, not synthetic oil. Curious to hear everyone's OPINIONS on this?

5000 miles is the recommended interval from Toyota for dino oil. I would say you're just fine.:frog:

Down below is straight out of the maintenance schedule.....every 5K miles. Interpret it as you may.
I personally let it go to 7500 miles ....YMMV
Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads: I do!
Inspect ball joints and dust covers
Inspect drive shaft boots (4WD)
Inspect engine air filter
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Lubricate propeller shaft
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace engine oil and oil filter
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body
Driving while towing, using a car-top
carrier, or heavy vehicle loading:Brock does!
Lubricate propeller shaft
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace engine oil and oil filter

This would have kept me from having a shock mount bottle rattle loose :cry2:
After our big trip (2k miles round trip) towing the trailer and wheeling in CO/Moab I will not use a 10k interval even on the 0w20. It will be changed out at 5k.

No misinformation up above. Harper posted the severe section. I totally agree with him on the 7500 miles even on dusty roads and towing. 10K for normal driving.

I'm an engineering tech for about 10 engineers, although I really only do work for about 4. You guys just have to learn to have thick skin - real engineers are pretty rough mouthed. most are not rude but you need to be open to learn.
But unfortunately they are almost always right, that's what they get paid to be.

My brother-in-law is a Mechanical Engineer at Alstom USA Inc. here in CT.
His son is an Engineer at Foster Wheeler Corporation in NJ.
Engineers are very detail oriented. Once I had to help my brother-in-law replace the shingles on one side of his house and he even had a diagram/drawing of how the ladder was to be laid out.
Everything is thought out by Engineers. That's just their nature.
I'm used to it.

36 I will welcome you too. Since this thread is hopelessly OT here is something I noticed in another thread: Your post in the current "Bugshield" thread was very clear, concise and informative. BMW recommends 15,000 mile, not km oil changes for its intervals with synthetic ( Mobile 1 I believe). This has been discussed to death on their forums as well. I have a 2008 535i which is a turbocharged engine and I have adhered to this schedule and I have had 90k miles and it has run smooth as silk. I think if you are changing synthetic oil at $5k intervals in these fairly low revving relatively large displacement engines in 4Runners you are wasting your money.
