10,000 mile service

I am not sure what I should do, my 12 TE is due for it's 10k mile service, I already did the 5k mile oil change myself with out any problem. But it is hotter than the south side of the sun this week and I will have some time available tomorrow to take it to the local dealer (not where I bought it) so I am actually thinking about trying to see if they could do the supposedly free service/oil change.

I have never in my life had anyone other than myself do an oil change on any of my 34 vehicles that I have owned over the years, so this would be something new for me. But since it is free would I be a fool not to take advantage of it? Or is the risk of them screwing something up not worth it?

Do what you want. If your dealer cannot handle an oil change they wouldnt have a service department, it will be fine.

Take it to the dealer

Best to let the dealer do it so there is a maintenance record. Besides the oil change, there are numerous other things they are supposed to check. Supposed to anyway. in the future, you don't want to give them an excuse to deny warranty coverage for lack of proper maintenance. Agree with brockeverly. If a dealer can't change oil without screwing up, they would not be in business..

Well I tried to take it to the dealer for the 10k mile service, but was told I would have to wait 2-1/2 to 3 hours before anyone would even look at it.

They said I should make an appointment a few days ahead of time. Well that is never going to work for me because I seldom know if I am going to have any free time that far in advance.

Unlike Toyota dealer service departments, in my business, we respond right away when our customers need service. So I am usually on the road heading to a job somewhere and cannot take time off just to get an oil change. And every day that I wait adds a couple hundred more miles to the vehicle.

So I guess I will just have to continue to perform the oil changes, lube and filters myself. The hell with the gimmick of "free maintenance". (only if you schedule it days in advance)

Is making an appointment that unreasonable? You'll find many garages, will get the service done very quickly and with an appointment you'll be in and out in no time. My dealer also provides great other services, shuttle services, theater room etc.
There are other people who share the planet with you and they also need the use of such services so by communicating and making appointments you can avoid situations like, Ten people showing up at the same time expecting instant gratification, then all going online and *****ing about the poor service because their whim wasn't met.
I'm sympathetic to not having time for such things but get in line dude, most of us just figure a way to squeeze it in.

Toyota dealer where I lived in California and the one I go to located in DE, and Maryland, have express oil change service. You do not need an appointment. They have 2 racks that do only that type of work. It was my understanding that most reputable Toyota dealers had this type of service. I never need an appointment and the longest I have been at the dealer was one hour. My Lexus dealer for my car has the same type of service plus they wash your car for you and provide a loaner if you ask so you can some errands while they are taking care of your car. Check some other Toyota dealers!

This would never have even been an issue if it were not for the supposedly free maintenance for 25k miles that Toyota is tempting me with because I would never pay someone else to do an oil change.

But it was hot and I was being lazy and just thought I would try to see if they would actually do the service. I guess I was wrong to think that they had some kind of fast lube rack like those 10 minute quick lube places. But I have never actually been to one of them either.

Since they obviously are too busy to do it in a reasonable time, I will just do it myself, I already have the oil and filters. If I make an appointment, then I will have to take a day off work to take the vehicle in on whatever day the dealer picks. And every day that I wait puts hundreds more miles on it.

I will use the dealer service department for warranty repairs but not for maintenance.

It should be cooler tomorrow so I will take an hour or so and just do it myself.

That is interesting, maybe I will stop in at another dealer somewhere in my travels and ask if they do express oil changes next time (15k 20k) but evidently the one in Modesto CA does NOT do that.

You sound like me! I will have to face this dilemma down the road since I only have 600 miles on mine. I dont like anyone to tuch my vehicles unless I have to for warranty work. I took my Tacoma to the dealer a few months ago to have a simple warranty done (replace one head light) I received my vehicle back with scratches on the bumper. I feel the techs that do the simpler repaires are that as experienced. I think I will save any headaches and do the services my self. What oil are you using since you are doing it? :thanks:

You sound like me! I will have to face this dilemma down the road since I only have 600 miles on mine. I dont like anyone to tuch my vehicles unless I have to for warranty work. I took my Tacoma to the dealer a few months ago to have a simple warranty done (replace one head light) I received my vehicle back with scratches on the bumper. I use the Toyota 0w20 synthetic oil and Toyota oil and air filters. I bought this stuff at the dealer parts department and am keeping the receipts on file.

I am also keeping a service file online at the Toyota Owners website with what I have done, the date and miles.

At 61 years old, and numerous vehicles in my past, any vehicle in warranty, I let the dealership do the work, regardless how minor it is, but than again, I'm retired, and have time on my hands. :thumb3:

My 2000 modded Corvette, now I'm the mechanic on that, and hold my on warranty....LOL :wink2:
