I think we all agree that extended warranties are a crap shoot right?

The warrantor is betting that the vehicle is not going to need repairs equal to or more than the warranty price.

The warrantee is hoping the vehicle will not need repairs - any repairs actually, and betting that IF it does need something major outside of the factory warranty that it will pay off.

So lets say, for the sake of argument, against all odds your 2015 4Runner tranny goes out, or your Entune console, or your KDSS, or ....

If you are keeping the vehicle for an extended period of time you have to weigh the cost vs. benefit of the extended warranty. Sure, odds are that you will not need to ever use it with a product the quality of Toyota, but...

It's all about where your price point and pain threshold sits.

I am generally not an extended warranty kind of guy, but when an extended warranty is reasonably priced it's worth thinking about.

I bought extended warranties on my appliances because the cost was very reasonable (price point) and all things added up they have paid for themselves three times over. And I am not talking junk appliances either.

What is your deductible and what parts does it cover? the pricing I provided to you is what I have seen first hand with Toyota's Dealer Services, granted I am an F&I guy for FCA, don't know if pricing has changed since you bought the warranty, because here in Buffalo, thats the upfront price I am aware of! OP, if you can get a deal better than what I saw, please do shop around!

It was a $100 deductible 8yr/100k toyota platinum $699 cash but that was then again 3 1/2 yrs ago on the FJ.

The one I priced out is for a new 16 4runner LE with 0 deductible full coverage 8yrs/100k, but again! OP, decide whats best for you and shop around for best price on warranty. You dont have to buy the warranty from the dealer who sold you the truck!

I have decided to view the extended warranty decision on a comprehensive basis, and I decided not to buy them. The last four vehicles that I have bought probably would've cost me $4,000 to $6,000 for extended warranties. Of those four vehicles, I do not believe I would have made a single qualifying warranty claim - maybe one but I can't remember the exact mileage when a radiator core crapped out. Some of those vehicles required expensive repairs at some point, but in just about every case, any extended warranty would have been beyond the mileage allowance. My problems did not occur until well over 100k miles.

That's $4k to $6k I still have in my pocket that would be gone if I had purchased extended warranties over the past decade or so of buying vehicles.

Also, the bumper-to-bumper warranty is typically 3 years/36k miles, and the powertrain warranty is often 5 years/60k miles on new vehicles. So a 10 year/100k mile extended service contract (from a legal standpoint, it is not a warranty) is really only a 7 year/64k mile extension or 5 year/40k mile extension on powertrain.

Be sure to read the fine print, too. Not everything is covered (ABS system is one example in the last one a dealer tried to sell me).

As long as you are within your manufactures warranty you should be able to purchase an extended warranty. To the OP that quoted price is high.

EW is just gamble vs a real breakdown that could cost thousands. Odds of it happening in a well built Toyota I admit are slim but it can still happen to anyone and on any vehicle no matter how well it is built.

I purchased my EW months after I took delivery of my 2014 4 Runner and got a solid price with zero deductible. I am willing to pay a little upfront for the gamble that indeed my 4 Runner could breakdown. To each their own and opinions vary...

Warranty for a 4Runner?

I just bought my wife a 2016 Trail, and would have laughed at an extended warranty, I agree 100% with Nate.

For the record, my 2001 Sport just turned 200k and besides one timing belt, one battery, fluids and brakes, I have only replaced u-joints, about $250. Running smooth up to 80mph on the highway, and I just took it off-roading this weekend, and I swear it's smoother on dirt roads than many cars are on an actual street.

I will get the 2nd timing belt soon, but my mechanic, a "retired" Toyota mechanic (who bought his own shop after getting sick of $30/hr for work being billed well into the $100's/hr) LAUGHS AT ME, each time a bring it in for oil and a checkup before a long trip and ask: "do anything else it needs". He's only done oil the last 3 years.

Remember peeps, most of us buy these things because they're bulletproof.

I have actually rented a couple Tahoes on trips and to be honest I like them.

What I don't like is the fact that the last one I rented had a sticker of $62K.

Sorry, but if I am spending $62K+ on an SUV, it's going to have a Stuttgart badge on the grill.

Has anyone ever used Mercury Insurance Group? My credit union offered an 84 month/100k mile extended warranty for $650. Seemed like a good deal.

I did with a BMW I had purchased used from a private party. They did give my shop a hard time once about the price per hour labor charge, but ultimately the job got finished and paid for. I'm not sure how much that was my shop compromising though. But I live in HI so our labor rates are higher than average.

I would take the time to ask your prefered auto shop if they have dealt with them before. If they have then it's all good. If not, you may encounter issues if they can't agree on labor rates or have communication issues. A lazy shop owner may not be happy dealing with them. The owners of my shop were the ones who answered the phones, they didn't have a secretary. So they did get kind of irritated at one point trying to communicate with Mercury.

Dealership snuck in an extended warranty on me. Won't say names, other than it rhymes with Trossinger.

I looked at the Toyota Care maintenance thing, it assumes you drive 12,000 per year, I am under 7500/year. And ... it gets worse, it keeps on assuming the same rate, so it expires at 5 years old or 60k miles. Pass.

I thought I might want an extended warranty coming from Jeep products, now I'm at 80k and I'm still waiting for it to break any day now. You might get the rare one that has issues, and that is what Toyota is betting on with those warranties.

So keep in mind that if you buy an extended warranty on a CPO vehicle, the 8 year warranty is from the date of first sale, not when you buy it. I learned the hard way, I bought an 8 year Toyota platinum warranty (ONLY because i did not know the previous history of the truck) and now i learn that i really only bought a 4 year warranty because my 8 years started in 2011.

Currently in a battle with the dealer to rectify this (wishful thinking).

I would never buy an extended warranty if i bough my 4runner new.

I bought the 8/100 Platinum for the same reason. Used car/unknown history. I paid exactly 1/2 what the OP was quoted. I figure @ $200/year, it will let me sleep better at night.
