100k - 200k mile 4th gen v6's post up

Going to 100K soon or later.

My 04 4Runner SR5 has not given me any headache so far. Once I changed O2 sensor under warranty. Everything else were regular routine maintenance.

I have third set of front brake pads and second set of rear brake pads. My second set tire, Yokohama, still look good. I changed up all fluids on 90K mile stone.

Actually I am wondering what I can work on this car for this mile stone.

Do I need to replace Shocks, belts, chains, or anything you guys would like to recommend?

Serpentine belt is an easy one. Change your plugs recently (<30k mi)? How about diff fluids? Radiator flush?

Depending on your usage maybe a trans flush might be in order.

As far as buzzme1004 going beyond 100k; V8 or V6? Look at this website, it'll help you detail exactly what Toyota recommends. You list sounds like you hit the big items pretty well. I'd put some fresh coolant in it. I'd flush the power-steering and brake system too.

No I didn't run a feeler gauge/plastigage. I don't even know the specs for the valve lash intake or exhaust. I just know nothing was tapping and looked really clean under there. I know there is wear, no off the shelf motor oil has had zinc since the late 80's early 90's so we are all fubar'd, lol. I only run zinc oil in the honda at $15 a quart, lol. No wear period and that was mic'd. I will pull the runner motor apart, just gotta wait till it goes and will mic everything. Gotta get a factory service manual while im at it.

Cool, where do you get zinc'd oil?


Is anyone old enough to remember ARCO Graphite? What ever happened to that?

I blew an engine passing someone on my '97 V6 at only 85k miles, was a fluke according to every mechanic I talked to...piston went right through the head I guess (not sure of the terms, I'm no mechanic). I had the engine replaced with a newer one then traded it in for a 4th gen...now on my second 4th gen...can't see myself in a different vehicle now.

I bought mt 2006 SR5 with 65,000 miles last June and I now have 116,000. Only thing that I have changed is the oil. Next oil change I plan on doing the air filter, spark plugs, and brakes.

2005 sport edition v6

Peter 78 questioned the 4gen v6 durability in the 5th gen thread so I was wondering what other high mileage members besides (the josh) have had as far as issues and how many miles some of the members were up to.

As for me, I am up to 107,500 and with 2 spark plug changes, one at 45k and one at 85k and regular air and oil changes every 3-7k. 1 set of front brakes and have goodyear sa as my 3rd set of tires. Only issue I have had is the ac/heater system disinfected with anitbacterial solution at 36k. Would love to hear from other 4th gen v6 folk, especially those with higher miles then mine.

I have an 05 Sport Edition V6 with roughly 108k miles on it. Bought it brand new in February of 05. I did the brakes about 6-8 months ago. I change the oil every 7500 miles with Mobil 1 synthetic. Spark plugs were changed at 60k miles (I think). I'm gonna put in some new plugs and flush the radiator in a week or two. So far, the only problem has been the sunroof. I think the cables are out of whack as it won't open/close properly. I rarely use the sunroof so maybe it's not lubed properly???
My 4runner is rock solid. Couldn't be any happier.

There may be another one. We will just have to see how this one turns out. To me it sounds like the head gasket.

so i posted about a week ago about my truck misfiring. well i took it to a shop today and he ripped apart the motor because we thought the injector was bad. well turns out anti freeze was leaking into the cylinder. doing a pressure test tonight will find out my engines fate tomorrow. anybody know what the cause could be and anywhere to get motors in jersey?

136k 2004

I have a 2004 V6 Sport with 136K. Changed from the stock Dunlaps to Cross Terrain at 40K then another set at 106K. I change the oil and filter every 3K or so. Living in the Northeast I attempt to wax twice a year and use SaltX once in a while during the Winter.
The dealer insisted the spark plugs did not need to be changed until 100K.I took him at his word and finally did it before then and again at 130K.
The camshaft timing oil control valve was replaced at 132K.
At 61K replaced the front pads and had the rotors turned.
At 123K replaced the front calipers,rotors and pads.
At 132K replaced the front rotors with Toyota parts-the Car Quest ran out pretty fast.
I forgot to mention the AT fluid has been changed a couple times as well as the gear case fluid changed and replace with synthetic.
This has been a fine car it handles our winter weather and tows our boat in the summer.
I do have some rust work to attend to on the front cross member under the radiator. Salt seems to attack there more than any place else.

My only complaint- the seats become numbing after a few hours.

next was the notorious belt squealing from the belt tensioner pulley. simple fix with some cleaning and lube, changed the serpentine belt while i was there, too.

Can you tell me more about what you did to the tensioner pulley? I believe I have the squealilng sound as well, I've noticed that it only happens when it's in a driving gear, not when in Park or neutral. Can you tell me what you did with that pulley?

Just Flipped 100k on my 04. It has been a great vehicle. No major Mechanical repairs so far (Knock on wood). Had the drivers door lock accuator replaced, I most likely caused the damage.

Synthetic since first oil change every 5k until 60k powertrain warranty was out and every 6k after that. OEM V-8 Filter.
M1 synthetic rearend lube at 50k. It is due again.
A/C relay started acting up at the beginning of this past summer. Just keep tapping it on a hard surface when it the light flashes, so far only twice in about 7 months.
Spark Plugs every 30k.
Replaced all brakes @ 72K It has warped a couple sets of rear rotors now. Considering going back to OEM for the next set to see if that helps.
3 sets of tires, Dunflops off at 32K, Goodyear Wrangler ATS off at 89k, Current set is Contential Cross contacts, Never buy again - Balance issues.

Need to have coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid flushed soon

'03 V6 - just flipped over 100k. Replaced 2 O2 sensors under warranty and haven't had any problems since. AT fluid change and serpentine belt are up next...

2004 SR5 4x4 here, 105,000 miles. No issues, syn oil every 3k. I do need to flush coolant, trans, and diffs.

Have 117K miles on her now. Other than regular maintenance , I havent had to do a thing until last week. Had to replace one of the catalytic converters and recalibrate the VSC. Otherwise just replace fluids, brakes and tires.

I have a '04 with 108k on it. Absolutely no problems. I have regular maintenance as required from either the dealer or Jiffy Lube. I am on my 3rd set of brakes...I drive really fast and stop often and fast

My Cross Terrains from Michelin lasted 106756 miles.....i replaced them when i did 'cause winter is approaching.
