'04 4Runner with 135,000 miles

I have a 2004 4Runner with around 135,000 miles and I drive the hell out of it. I'm surprised it hasn't had any problems yet! I put in the K&N intake tube and filter and I think that caused something on the throttle body to screw up around 80-90k but it was replaced under the 100k mile warranty. I changed the spark plugs twice cause I thought it would be fun and put on new brakes and rotors on the front, real easy to do btw. Other than that, my 4Runner has been flawless (minus a few wrecks).

They are supposed to be changed every 30k. V6 came factory with conventional plugs, only the V8 came with platinum plugs good for 120K Miles. So twice was not quite enough... :thumb3:

106K - 2004 SE. Normal fluid changes per book, brakes all around at 60K. Just put on the 3rd set of tires (including originals). Problem about 50k with the lower idler pulley - replaced it and had to replace it 9 months later (under repair warranty) - really loud squeal. Now have a constant high pitch whine from the idler near the alternator. Had to replace the muffler/tailpipe at 80K - the weld broke between the 2. Still have the original plugs - was told they needed to be changed at 100K - that'll happen next month. Then the timing belt the month after.

Do you have a V8 since the V6 do not have a timing belt. They have a chain which does not require a change. The plugs on a V6 should be changed every 30k Miles. I believe 120K for the V8 since they came with platinum from the factory.

A/C-heater blower/pump/motor got stuck at 84k- removed it..tore it apart..forced the motor to spin.. took apart the motor repositioned the carbon element in the motor.. still works but now makes a faint chirp sound. word of advice dont go months at a time without using the a/c or heater..apparently if you dont give it exercise it can rust and get stuck?

considering purchasing a magnaflow exhaust or trd that comes out the side.. with my back window down i still get sulfur smell even after the tsb..

its cold out 100k is right around the corner..must purchase garage heaterrrrrrrr

My 2004 4Runner V6 rolled over to 100,000 miles a few days ago! Woohoo!

I have 120k on my 2004 T4R Sport. So far so good. I went through a set of front calipers after the originals froze at about 70k. I run NGK Iridium spark plugs and have the oil changed every 5k miles. I've had a K&N filter in the stock airbox since it was new and have cleaned it a couple of times.
Overall it's really amazing the reliability of these trucks. I bought mine when I got tired of pouring money into my Chevy S10 Blazer. The Chevy service advisor suggested I consider a new vehicle. I said, "Your right I should". So that day I went to the Toyota dealer and bought my 4Runner. When I went back to pick up my Blazer I told the service advisor I took his advice and bought a new vehicle. He asked if I bought another Blazer. I said, "Are you kidding? After all I've been through with this one and it only has 100k miles, I couldn't even consider another GM product. I bought a Toyota 4Runner!"
BTW...My Toyota dealer, Competition Toyota in Middle Island, NY is a very good dealer. They always treat me fairly and with respect as if they are still trying to earn my business after I bought and serviced six Toyota vehicles in the last 14 years.

Well, it seems our 4.0 V6's are doing pretty good. I think I will un-stick this thread. If our engines start failing, it will be up in the front, but for right now, I want less sticky's in each sub-forum.

Keep the posts coming, for me I now have 56,000 miles, I know not much and it is fine.

Nope a 6... The owner's book I have says 100K on the 6 and when I questioned it the service manager said 100K that it had platinum plugs.

Hmm... they quoted me a timing belt on the last visit. Will need to check that out.

If you remove the oil fill cap and look down the tube, you should able to see the chain on the V6.

Ok - I did some checking. Yes it has a chain - not a belt. Duh!. I guess the dealer will quote you whatever you ask - even if you don't need it. Also, the plugs were replaced 3 times 32K 70K and 102K during the normal 30, 45 90 maintenance (even though I wasn't exactly on schedule). I guess I should be paying more attention to what is being done to the vehicle. I really have been spoiled by this one.... I had a Jeep before this and I spent a ton of money in maintenance in the first couple years or so than have in the 5+ that I've had the Toyota.

Today it proved its worth again in the 2nd of the 3 day winter storm we are experiencing in NE Ohio.

I just bought a 2003 V8 Limited 4x4 with 140k on it. CarFax shows a full maintenance history from the dealer. I spoke with the previous owner, and he said it's been bulletproof. It runs and looks like it has 70k. Even the leather on the driver's seat bolster is in relatively good condition.

I've only put about 600 miles on her so far, but I fully expect to get another 100k.

lets talk really high mileage!

I see a lot of people on here with 130k or so. To me, thats not a high mileage vehicle unless your talking about a Jeep. Having owned Subarus, Acuras, and Hondas, I expect over 200k from a well maintained vehicle. That said:

I bought my 2006 V6 Sport with under 30k recently. I drive 30k a year for my job and due to my finances I had to get a 6 year loan. 30k for 6 years is 180k, plus the 30k I already have, I basically will have 210k on the truck when its paid off! Of course I can pay off the loan sooner but thats not possible right now. I don't tow, rarely go offroad, and I use Mobil 1 at 5k intervals. Truck runs great and I have no problems with it. Can I realistically expect to achieve this type of mileage and still have a truck that is in reasonably good condition to keep driving or sell?

Well, that is why we had this thread. 2003 was the first year for this engine, so it is still somewhat new. There have been a few concerns and we will just have to see how it holds up. As far as driving it at 210,000 miles and still being in good shape, I think that is reasonable. At my work we drive on the job and 200,000 miles on the car is the norm. It seems when they get up to the high 200's, say 260,000 to 280,000 miles you can expect some trouble. One person here has a RAV4 with 310,000 and it is her primary car. It just keeps on trucking.

The Service manager is Flat wrong. This has been discussed over and over on this forum. The dealerships are often wrong. They ASSume to much. You know what assuming does. All 4th gen V6s came factory with conventional plugs. NON-PLATINUM... Often with 3 NGK plugs on one side and 3 Denso on the other. Only The V8s came with Platinum. They are required to be changed at 30,000 mile intervals to maintain the emissions warranty. Read your Maintenence book carefully. That info is not in the regular owners manual but in one of the smaller blue books that came with it. Both my 04 and 08 "Maintenence Passports" have the 30K mile change info in them with a foot note about the emissions warranty.

I tend to be pretty lazy about any maintenance that isn't oil change/oil filter/air filter.

My 4Runner has:
original timing belt
new plugs at 30k, 150k (shameful, isn't it?)
original water pump
original oxygen sensors
original stinky catalytic converter
2 sets of replacement tires (currently on Michelin ATX/2s)
one replacement climate control console (wife spilled a coke into it)
new brake pads front/back at 175k
new front rotors 175k

I change the oil/filter every 15k using Mobil 1 Synthetic Extended Performance. Originally, extended performance wasn't on the market and I was using Mobil 1 Synthetic and changing every 5k.

Except for the climate control console, no part on my 4Runner has *required* replacement.

That is excellent! Am I reading right that you didn't have to replace your front brake PADS until 175k?! Did you cut holes in the floor Flintstone style and use your feet?!

I pulled into my driveway today and low and behold a bunch of zero's greeted my eyes. 100K horray!
