12,000 mile oil changes?

to make it simple, based on an oil that is good for 15k miles per oil sampling:

person 1: doing oil change every 5k miles, goes through 3 times 2k miles of high wear metal for 15K miles. That is 6K miles of high wear metal period on a total of 15K miles

person 2: making oil change every 15k miles, goes through phase of high wear metal only 1 time 2K miles. That is 2K high wear metal period on a total of 15K miles.

So every car manufacture has caused major wear to my motor for telling me to change oil every 5k miles?

Wonder how my 4runner is still going 21 years and 280k miles later. Or my 400+whp 300k miles Mitsubishi that's 26 years old. All get oil changes every 5k miles.

Guess this wear is so small it's not an issue?

New guy, same old story. Of you pulled the motor apart and it looks like the oil hasn't been changed much by PO, changing it often probably isn't a bad thing afterwards in an effort to clean up the rotating assy. If your oil is black at 3k miles, you should ask the PO how often it was changed.

Can't speak for Toyotas, but in my Fords I do 5k-7k mile changes with Motorcraft synth blend and Motorcraft filters. Usually do a filter every 3k. Had the heads off a 170k mile dohc motor and there was absolutely zero buildup.

Blackstone Labs and Bobistheoilguy are excellent resources instead of imaginary internet wizards. (Not pointing fingers, just seen this discussion go on and on and on and on and on and on on several forums)

Ok I will weigh in. I grew up changing the oil in my dads companies trucks (think paper cans we used to drive a metal spout in) about every 3000 miles. Usually old chevy 6 cylinders. we had about 5 at a time. between 4 and 5 quarts of oil. mostly driven around town. Residential construction. bought a new f150 in 99. changed oil about 10000 miles. started with conventional and ended with syn blend. Sold the truck running well with 235000. seemed good internally, just leaking from everywhere. bought an 07 tundra with 200000 miles a couple years ago. using Syn every 10000. no problems so far.

Depends on what conditions you're driving in regularly...bobistheoilguy has tons of linked evidence suggesting most full syns can easily go beyond 5k, typically further.

If you're "advising clients" to change full synthetic oil at 3.5k miles, I can see the profits from here.

He said he recommends clients to change at 5000k.

I dont think theres a problem with letting the oil go for longer than 3000k, it's the filter that doesn't last for 5000, 7000 or 10,000 miles. Maybe the full synth ones do (not sure) but I use dino & yota filters every 3k.

I used M1 HM oil for few years and changed it at about 6K-7K with OEM filter.
Last year I decided to try Royal Purple HMX (high mileage) with RP filter and run it for 10K that took entire year. At times when I checked the dipstick, oil was still translucent at 7K, darker, but translucent. At 10K it was dark, but not darker then M1 after 7K.
Btw, the dark color of the used oil is not necessarily all dirt. Due to high operating temperatures of the engine oil gradually changes color.

I'm at 7000 miles on Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage. Probably not what you want to hear at this interval, but it's an OEM filter. The oil still looks very nice but it's getting changed. This truck regularly hits 22 mpg on the highway for the past two years, so I know it's healthy.

<"not Toyotas"

Exactly. No point in changing the oil in a 4Runner at 3500 miles especially if full synthetic. I check the oil level once every few weeks, but I don't change mine until minimum 7k, there's just no point.

And you continue to miss my point - this isn't about oil condition; it's about contaminants. Also, I'd propose that using synthetic in a 3rd gen 4runner is both pointless and a waste of money (do I smell profits here?) - you need the thermal protection of synthetic oil?

And since you asked, I also have to ask - are you a Toyota engineer? Are you aware of some quality of the 20 year old Toyota V6 that precludes it from issues suffered by other engines?

3-5K and whatever quality oil you choose to use is solid advice, virtually irrefutable, and really not worth criticizing; anything else is very much well-intentioned opinion based on oil condition analysis.

Who has the enough mileage to provide anything other than anecdotal evidence for the positive effect of high-mileage oil changes? Show of hands, please?

If you feel good about it, fantastic. I think that's great. Carry on in good faith. I however, can't respond to the OP's question of 12K oil changes in an affirming way.

And for full disclosure - I'm ridiculously irresponsible about my own 4Runner's oil changes - cobbler's shoes and all...

Those were not OEM synthetics

you are just shovelling clouds. Do oil analysis and you'll see that there is probably no point in doing 5K oil changes on your 3rd gen 4Runner on synthetic beside very, very special factors. Facts before bullshit. Do your researches and your job before posting such uneducated statements. And even 5K oil change on today's non-synthetic most of the time pointless.

lol, nice.

Not really, I specifically stated color of oil isn't always an indicator of oil status referring to contaminants.

Also, I'd propose that using synthetic in a 3rd gen 4runner is both pointless and a waste of money (do I smell profits here?) - you need the thermal protection of synthetic oil?

Why use synthetic at all then? I dunno, perhaps my engine isn't leaking, pretty clean internally, and I'd prefer to change my oil at longer intervals.

And since you asked, I also have to ask - are you a Toyota engineer? Are you aware of some quality of the 20 year old Toyota V6 that precludes it from issues suffered by other engines?

Your assumption that the 5VZ-FE isn't above average, far above many domestic engines, makes me question your Toy-Loyalty and think your card should be revoked son.

3-5K and whatever quality oil you choose to use is solid advice, virtually irrefutable, and really not worth criticizing; anything else is very much well-intentioned opinion based on oil condition analysis.

"Opinion based on oil condition analysis". What do you think your 3-5k oil change recommendation is based upon?

Who has the enough mileage to provide anything other than anecdotal evidence for the positive effect of high-mileage oil changes? Show of hands, please?

You're missing the point, again. There's no difference between changing your oil at 3.5, 5, or even 10k with a good oil/filter other than your out of pocket for maintenance. There is evidence available, but apparently you're too good or too busy doing early term oil abortions for customers to go read it.

And for full disclosure - I'm ridiculously irresponsible about my own 4Runner's oil changes - cobbler's shoes and all...

Then you'd be the perfect candidate to back up your claims since you don't take bobistheoilguy.com seriously or be bothered to read it. Update us when your oil analysis comes back.

I do the same with my 2 4runners and tundra. Just use a good filter made for synthetic oil.

Change a good dino every 3-5k and you will be fine. 3k made sense with 1960s vintage additive packages but I'm convinced modern dinos will do 5k no sweat.

I run an oversized all synthetic media NAPA Platinum filter with Wal-Mart SuperTech synthetic at a 6500-7500 OCI. My philosophy is cheap oil, expensive filter. I do a Blackstone UOA every other change and they always say all is fine and I could go longer. Once, circumstances conspired and the truck went 9000, and that UOA said I could try 11000, I didn't.

Honestly, on these engines with modern oils any halfway rational program will work just fine. Arguing over this is pretty pointless.

That said, 12k is pretty whack in my book.

i do conventional every 5K. cheap and easy.
the 4runner is not high comp or FI.

the audi tt 225 turbo with a few "bolt on's" i had, had a rough life. it wasnt driven to church and back...

that was changed with full syn every 5k (no later)...
at 190,000miles the turbo was still strong and quiet

idk, thats what i did and it worked. so i kept doing it.
