Now that I recall it is when you open either door and turn the ignition on (such as to roll the windows up/down). This will turn the headlights back on if the switch is in the auto position. Closing the door will not turn off the headlights. You may not notice your lights are on in the daylight.
Anyway, carry on.. I promise I had no intention to thread jack.

Greg, our TEs don't have that "auto" feature on the lighting switch stalk; what you are describing is the car turning off the headlights for you in case you accidentally (or purposely) left it on after shutting down and exiting the car. The only way to turn it back on is if you turn the car on again, or if you turn the light switch completely off and back on. I believe this auto off only works if you have the headlights on while the car is running, and then turn off the car and open the driver's door.

Mr. SkidPalace, I think you are talking about the auto headlights feature that turns your lights on and off based on the available ambient light? I am not sure which 4runners have this option, maybe the LE? The turning off after 30 seconds works the same as above, but the turning back on all depends on if you're in the dark or not, at least that how I remember my old car working.

If I recall correctly, the only light that shuts off immediately upon opening the door (after shutting off the engine) is if you left the switch at the parking lights on level. This turns back on the same way though, you have to either turn the car on again, or turn off the switch completely off and back on.

My 2013 LE does have the "auto" switch position on the stalk and it is indeed triggered by ambient light.

The 30 second delay bothers me, it can be programmed for less time though I believe.

I'm paranoid about auto light anything, I manually turn them on and off it just can't do it lol. :blabla:

I had my lights stay on once (SR5) - I believe I turned off the lights, turned off the ignition, and then decided to try leaving the lights "always on" and let the auto-shut off handle it (after reading that lots of you do it this way, and adding the Auto-Light feature from the LE is not a trivial task).

I believe in this case, the lights will stay on (if turned on AFTER turning off the ignition). Luckily I happened to catch this and headed back to my truck and turned off the lights after 10 minutes or so. The exact scenario might have been different, but lights were still on when I returned to my truck.

I have since stopped doing this (no need for lights during the day, and I don't mind turning them on manually - I also hate the dimmed dash lighting during the day). I also have the Premium Alarm System which turns on the BRIGHTS after arming/un-arming - I ALWAYS make sure I see the lights turn off as I make my exit. I'm Paranoid - even with a set of jumper cables and a huge 31M DieHard Platinum on board!
