14 limited seat heaters stuck on!!

Well maybe my search ability sucks lol. But did not find a 14 related thread.


2014 Limited
5,500miles.

My seat heaters are stuck on at full heat.

The control knobs have always been set for full cool from the day I picked her up.

on the way home from work noticed the seats were not cooling and even though I could hear the fan running on both seats there was no air flow present.

Then I started to notice both seats very quickly start producing heat as though the control was set at full heat.

Moving the control knob through its full range the seats stayed on at full heat.

So right now it full heat or off.

Are the seats CAN Buss controlled via the ecu
control knob > ecu> to seat heat/cool controller

Dealerership is going to trouble shoot tomorrow.

Anyone else experienced the same issue??

Just found this thread via searching, so I'm not going to start a new one.

I have been experiencing this issue on my 14 TEP since Saturday. For whatever reason the last 4 times I've driven the truck the seat warmers are always on what feels like "high". The first two times I had initially turned the seat warmer on, and eventually off, but they never turned off. The last two times I never even turned them on but soon into my drive the seat is super toasty.

Here's the weird thing: I plasti dipped my rear bumper on the same day this issue began. After letting the dip dry, the first time I drove the vehicle the next day, there was fairly heavy smell of what I assumed to be paint fumes. Even though all the windows were closed during painting, I assumed it was because it had spent the night in the garage with residual fumes.

I didn't think much of it until this weird electrical issue with the heated seats, which made me think that maybe the smell has to do with melted wires instead.

What was the resolution to the issue when you took it to the dealer? Anyone else experienced this recently?
 
I took her to the dealership when it first happened and they said "they could not duplicate the issue"

So I was thinking at the time maybe I was just imagining this because when had them look at it i asked to sit in one on the lot and the cool setting on the brand new one worked just as well as mine. And it was also at first just pushing out hot air from sitting in the sun all day but eventually started to cool the seat down. when I had my issue I swear it only got hotter and never cooled off on a 30 minute drive home.

Granted that even thought they call these cooled seats it more like just blown air more than actually cooled with a heat exchanger.


But it appears that other owners are also having the same issue.....

I have not had the issue crop up since then but it has been winter and have been using the heat setting only....

Checked the fuses, all good. I wouldn't think it would be a fuse issue though, since that would lead me to believe it wouldn't work all vs. always on. My issue finally went away, so I would probably get the same response from the dealer about not being able to replicate the issue. I have about 1k until my next service (~20.5k), so I'll bring it up then and see if they've seen it on any other vehicles.

if I remember correctly, nowhere does it say cooled. everywhere official says ventilated.

edit: Toyota knows the difference between cooled and ventilated is a big distinction. the only cooled seats I have seen in a Toyota is the lexus LS sedan.

I did not read the ligature carefully before I purchased:flame:moping::... The sales man is the one that was saying cooled via forced air.

Either way; cooled or just ventilated, it would not have stopped me from buying the 4runner.:becky::becky:

I just experienced the same exact issue you're describing with my 2012 Limited. Driver side seat way hotter than normal, switch in the off position. Also, smelling a really strange odor coming out of the air vent - definitely smells like something is burning.

Calling dealership tomorrow. Anyone have any more information on a resolution?

Hi jrussell,

I examined/studied this thread from start to finish and there may be two different issues. One is a frozen ECU (much like when a windows computer screen freezes and needs a re-boot) which needs to be RESET... battery disconnected for a minimum of 4hrs! This procedure will force the resistance heating element controller to go back to normal after you disconnect it for the 4hrs and then re-connect it!

The other issue may be a 'Shorted resistance heater' in the seat cushion! To check it, you disconnect the malfunctioning heated seat, and measure the resistance across the heater terminals (in OHMS)! Then disconnect the good one and measure the resistance (in ohms) using an ohm meter and compare the resistance reading to the one that's suspected to be malfunctioning; the bad one will be reading a much lower number than the good one e.g., say... 6 ohms as opposed to 500 ohms (this is a fictitious number for an example... not an actual reading)!

But just take a reading, one heater will have a very radical number because it is shorted; either straight to a ground or the current can only travel through a portion of it's resister coil and then it jumps straight to the end of the resistor path; by-passing the majority of an electrical path... hence the term SHORTED!

Hope this helps to explain the term, and the problem,

I just had this problem last night with an awful burning smell coming from the AC. I replaced the cabin air filter, then afterward realized the driver's seat heater was ON, even though the switch was in the OFF position.

Any luck on fixing yours? I'm guessing there's a short, just gotta chase it down.
 
Anyone here have a resolution to their problem? I pulled the fuse for now. I'll try and pull the battery later to reset ECU.

Hey guys,

2011 limited 4runner here with heated seats.

I have the same issue today. Smells like paint or burnt rubber in the cab. The drivers seat is getting hot but the warmer is off. Also, one of the connectors under the seat is REALLY hot. The wife has the truck right now so I'll try to pull the heater fuse and see if that's it. But does anyone know if there is a particular issue with these seats? Do I have to pull the battery for 4 hours or will pulling the heater fuse do the same thing?

If anyone still has this issue, I fixed it on mine.

Under the seat, there is a small black box component under the seat that was getting incredibly hot. It was two plugs and two snaps to remove it and upon further inspection, the internals were fried. The Toyota part no. on the component is 87501-60050 and upon further research with Toyota, 87501-60040 replaces this piece. Here is a link for the piece:

I have one on order and am going to replace the switch (84751-35110) as well in case it was sending a bad signal to make the controller overheat. Hope this helps any one else!

Hello. I have a 2011 4runner limited. Is there a left and a right to the part that you mentioned?
