14" TE guys weird noise

I haven't experienced any strange sounds yet when turning. 2.4k miles on the car.

Maybe I just don't know what sounds to look out for lol. Is it loud? Barely audible? Windows have to be up/down to hear it?

2014 TE w/ KDSS
I believe 4/14 manufactured date.

Thanks

I found my build date. 4/14 too! The windows do not have to open to hear it. It sounds like cans rattling. It's happens rarely for me, but it happens.

So question for everyone who is experiencing this potential KDSS issue - who has actually brought this to the attention of your local Toyota dealership and what has been the response (or lack of)? In reading this thread, I know a few have had discussions with there service department (and at least one replacement in Poland), but wanted to see if we are getting any traction on this issue. When I have my first oil change done, I plan on bring this issue to their attention and I am also planning on getting confused looks and the "never heard that before" reponse. Any thoughts or experiences?

Nobody has even proved its the KDSS making the noise. Maybe the Polish guy can but nobody here. FYI my 2012 TE rattles every now and then but it could be anything from brake pads to heat shields to absolutely anything. KDSS is probably the least likely to be making a noise than some of the more common culprits. If you have a rattle, AND it can be reproduced at will, tell your dealer. DO NOT say KDSS, just say a rattle. If you specify then that is all they check. I cannot reproduce mine and to tell you the truth it's no big deal anyway. In all honestly, if it's not reproducible, at will, whenever you want it to, then it frankly won't exist to the service techs because they can't fix what they can't see or hear.

From what i have read this "rattle" as you like to call it, is isolated to the 2014 TE w/ KDSS so it comes as no surprise that you cannot duplicate it on your 2012. I would not describe what I hear as a rattle, but rather something deeper and directly tied to the suspension. It happens only at low speeds making a left hand turn with uneven terrain (potholes or steep uphill approach). I can duplicate it given the right terrain. It's not brake pads, heat shield, loose mud flaps, etc. If the terrain is steep enough (turning left into a steep incline for example) with some speed I can feel the vibration through the steering wheel. Though I do agree rushing into the service department and point the finger at strictly the KDSS may not be the best approach, but its better then simply stating i have a "rattle"....

This thread reminds me of when a new iphone comes out and suddenly there is some major fault that floods the internet - antenna gate, scuff gate, touch ID gate,.....

I think we should call this KDSS left turn gate.

Totally. Except the issue discussed in this thread is real and is happening with a $45,000 "iPhone".

Something tells me you don't have KDSS..........

...so then it can be duplicated and replicated on command? I use the term "rattle" because that is what is used in many posts in this thread. Go get a service guy, take him for a ride and let them hear it. Then report back the solution for others.

There are other differences between the TE and the SR5 or LE models, even on the 2014. Sway bar, LCA's and all mounts are different between models. Somebody thought they had a "smoking gun" because the P/N's are different on the KDSS cylinder from 2010-2013 and 2014. Did anything become of that? You realize that P/N's for an assembly will change even if it means something as simple as a boot zip tie right?

It could be a sway bar mount. It could be a bushing on the LCA. It could be anything, that's why I said don't classify it as KDSS only.

I will report anything useful when I visit the service department and take them for a ride along.

Let me state that I do love my truck. This is not a major issue by any means and more of an occasional annoyance then anything. I will not be selling my truck because of this, nor will I gripe about how this should not be happening with a $40k+ truck. Honestly, if this is the only "issue" I experience for a while, I count myself lucky. This is a solid vehicle - well built and well engineered and I don't regret the purchase what so ever. If we as a group who are experiencing the 2014 TE RattleGate can collectively work together to get some traction on resolving this "issue" - then great! If not, oh well, I can live with it.

Also I have owned 3 VW Jetta's in the past so I count myself as a seasoned grand master expert in identifying rattles :)

Something maybe to check

Hi all, been reading this thread, I don't have a 4 runner but my 87 toyota 4 x 4 had a sound that maybe similar when turning left on an incline, it was a stopper bolt that limited how far you could crank the steering, hunter:

at 7500 miles still have the noise, I dont drive it very often but my wife does. I'll try changing the KDSS cylinders at 15k or something when i have time. I can do it anytime i'd like but work has been busy and i've been lazy haha

I have this sound from my '14 kdss every time I leave my neighborhood going left over bump. I don't get this at all on my '13 Land Cruiser kdss. Not sure how the parts differ from the two but must be somewhat similar.

I traded in a VW Golf TDI for a 14 TEP w KDSS a few months ago. I turned down the radio and listened for the sound the other day. Pretty sure I could hear it but coming from the VW this 4runner sounds like a sound isolation booth. I get it, a ~40k truck should have zero flaws but I'm more aggravated with the stereo system than the random left hand clunk.

KDSS new update from Poland

Hi!

Toyota has finally managed to solve the KDSS issue by changing both cylinders from the Prado (Land Cruiser 150) 2013 model (before facelifting).
They tried the replacement 2014 model cylinders but they were acting the same way as mine (so it is a factory issue).
Now everything is perfect with the suspension - KDSS is working smoothly on bumpy roads, finally! (it took my ODO to reach almost 5500km).

Find attached list of spare parts changed in my car (sorry it is Polish :)

Good luck with getting your KDSSs into order!

2015 TRD Pro, same thing

Hey guys, new to the forum, just traded our FJ Cruiser for a '15 4R TRD Pro, and I'm getting this rear suspension noise over small to moderate bumps; presumably the same thing you all have been getting in your also KDSS equipped TE's. Noise primarily comes from the left side. Any new news on this, I'm going to pop over to the dealer later today if possible to see what we can find out, but any info would be greatly appreciated.

Same issue

I have the same rattle issue when turning left on a bumpy roads as well as driving straight on potholes with low speed. Build date on my 2014 TEP W/KDSS is 05/14. Has anyone tried to talk to dealership to replace KDSS system with the old one from 10-13 as the Polish guy mentioned?
Thanks
