14 Year Old T4R Getting 20.73MPG

I checked my mileage today and I am getting 20.73 miles per gallon out of my 14 year old 4Runner! (Built in December of 1999) She has almost 230K miles on her and she has never run better. I think it is the Mobil1, the MMO in the gas, the NGK dual ground laser plugs and regular maintenance. Best of all, she's paid for! Damn these are fine pieces of machinery!!!!!

That seems about right. I average 20.X and my last tank from yesterday was 20.2. It probably would have been higher, but temps. dropped 5° for this tank (I record the weather along with my tank info).

Some of these guys who live in the north aren't going to get nearly as good of gas mileage, but they get to have a little more fun with their peppier rigs!

That's crazy! Factory oem sticker showed 19mpg on highway for these rigs. Are you consistently getting that kind of mileage? How are you calculating? Not calling you a liar, I just like to see proof Especially since I only get 12-13mpg!

I once got 22.1mpgs on my 4Runner while on a road trip. With the cruise control on at about 60-65mph. The trip meter went up to 350 before I chickened out and pulled into a Chevron at 3 in the morning. I track my mpgs with an iPhone app.

I usually get around 17-19 highway though due to my aggressive driving behaviour (this stemmed from previously owning a BMW 330i ZHP Performance Package). On an average day, though, I get 15-16 since I drive to school everyday and it's only a 5-mile drive. This is in Los Angeles, so you would expect lots of stop-and-go traffic.

I was regularly getting 22.5mpg on the hiway, with a few mods, before I installed the S/C. I'm down to 21.5mpg with the S/C.

Well, I will be putting my 2nd tank of gas in mine this weekend since I bought it a month ago.

I am guessing it will be around 17 mpg of mixed driving but mostly in town.
I just don't drive a lot obviously (well, I do drive a lot but in my company truck so the runner is a weekend warrior).

Going out of town next week so it will be interesting to see what she will do on a road trip.

I would constantly get 20.5 to 21 mpg mostly highway out of my 2000 4x4, If I would do mixed driving it would go down to 17-18 mpg. Miss the MPG's out of the 3.4L, the 08 4th Gen I just bought with the 4.7L has more power but you def. pay for it at the pump. Im averaging 15-16mpg mixed with it.

Not sure what kind of "proof" you are looking for. Seems like a few others on here are in the same MPG range as me. As far as how it is calculated, that's simple. Fill up, set trip odometer to ZERO, drive it, refill it, divide the miles driven by the gallons pumped. (duh!) (I do not overfill the tank - when the pump shuts off, I round it to the next 5 - 10 cents or so as I don't want to screw up the carbon canister) This was a 75% highway, 25% city run. The highway speed on that day averaged at 73 per my GPS for the trip I took. I only used the GPS for the highway trip to take my sister to the hospital in Birmingham. I was hitting 80-85 on some parts of this trip on the interstate. As far as "mods" go, I only have the deckplate mod and a K&N filter. MAF is kept super clean. I keep this truck well maintained (with OE parts) and the 02 sensors are only about 8 months old. I have new coil packs (4 months old) new spark plug wires (4 months old) new NGK Laser double grounded plugs (4 months old) and I run Mobil1 5W30 and replace one quart with MMO at every oil change. Just changed the coolant and thermostat (pre-winter maintenance) about a month ago and the radiator is a fairly new (7 months) KOYO. Large auxiliary transmission cooler bypassing the radiator.

My '97 is consistently getting 20+ mpg, but I don't use ethanol blended fuel.
