163k maint, fluid type and other opinions needed...

I searched for a few, but my lack of sleep (work nights and avg 6 hours of sleep :sleepy:) is working against me. Anyway, as some have seen in my other post I just picked up a 99' 4runner with a bazzilion miles (163k) and dont know history on it so I am going to start from scratch.

The Toyota dealer did a 79 pt inspection and changed the oil and and replaced the brakes. According to the sticker, timing belt was done at 94k so I should be good for a while there. So that means that I will do the following:

Plugs - OEM from dealer $3.13 ea.
Diffs and T-case 80/90 wt, brand recommendations?
** has rear diff lock, anything special for that **
Tranny - Dextron 3 or ???
Fuel filter - OEM ???

Radiator is full, however it has green coolant and it looks like the overflow may have red? I wonder if the dealer topped the reservoir off with red? Anyway, is it okay to have green or should I get OEM coolant and flush the system?

Will probably do a tranny cooler, heard from local tranny guy that B&M is overrated so he recommended True-cool or Hayden. He said to get the biggest one that will fit based on the dimensions. Any recommendations on size?

Anything else I am missing? Any and all comments are appreciated.

Thanks guys

Sounds like a good game plan, here is what I would do...

Diffs & T-case I believe is 75/90 weight. I run amsoil severe gear in my diffs & T-case. I ran this in my tacoma as well which had the factory E locker. You don't need any special additive or fluid because of the locker.

I would do a few tranny drain & refills. Since you don't know the full service history of the rig I wouldn't do a tranny flush with a machine. I recently switched to amsoil universal ATF and I really noticed a nice increase in the smoothness of my tranny. Your only going to a get a fraction of the old fluid out (around 2-4qts) with a drain & refill so I bought 3 gallons of amsoil ATF and will do the drain refills in 100 mile or so increments.

I don't have any experience with the fuel filter but I would run OEM if I was to switch it.

I would most certainly flush the radiator and fill with toyota red coolant. Especially since there's green in the radiator. Its an easy job.

I just installed my tranny cooler. Here's the link to some good pics, info, & how to install. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/63553-writeup-tranny-cooler-install.html

As for other things I would give it a good look over. Lube the drive shafts, check your pwr steering & brake fluids, maybe a bottle of complete fuel system cleaner during your next fill up, and last but not least get that thing on the trail :reddance:

Some other stuff to look at:
-Upper and lower ball joints
-Inner and outer tie rod ends
-check CV boots for cracks or tears
-Look under your truck at the steering rack and as a buddy turns the steering wheel back and forth, the rack should stay put. If it moves more than 1/4" or so, it would be a good idea to replace the steering rack bushings
-sway bar bushings, end links, and end link bushings.
-Lift each tire off the ground and check for 12-6 o'clock wobble (bad wheel/hub bearings). Side to side play (3-9 o'clock) would indicate bad tie rod ends.
-Basically when checking this stuff, make sure no rubber boots are leaking and nothing is loose.
-Check u-joints/driveshaft for play
I know they did a 79 point inspection and most of this stuff was probably on the list, but I only trust my own eyes.
