17" OEM Bridgestone Tires

Did not want to forget to say thank you to everyone for the great information (haven't been on this site for the last month). I am going to keep the Bridgestone OEM's and then get new rims (Granites) and tires when the OEM's get worn out. At the current rate, I am putting on approximately 20K miles/year so I shouldn't have to wait too much longer.

same boat as you. I wish i had the bridgestones. LOL

I want to get new tires, but, i think i'd rather have a pioneer avic z130BT, so i'm thinking of doing that mod first!

My Dunlops only have 2500 miles on them so i could buy new tires first, and then sell my dunlops which would make my new tires cheaper....dammit!
 
I'm at 19k miles on my Bridgestones. I've been pretty happy with them through winter snow and a few off-road excursions last year (they were relatively dry excursions, admittedly).
 
I guess that I was lucky. My friend has a circa 2005 Sequoia with the exact same Brignstone Dueler HT tires that came on my SR5. His tires were getting pretty bald when I picked up my new T4R. He gave me $600 for the tires with 50 miles on them and I got a set of Hankook Dynapro AT-M. Net out of my pocket was about $50, including installation.

I carry jack,shovel,compressor,etc but there are no trees or boulders to hook a winch to so way back in the hills it's better to keep rolling. As always, peace of mind comes with a price tag.

Will make report when I get back next Feb-March. Will be good test of both Trail and Revo2....about 3000 miles highway/interstate round trip, then home on the range from sandy 100 degrees F to snowy -0 and a 20 cf cargo box on the roof rack the entire time(-10% mpg.) Will try to disconect the rear speakers since my dog kennels are back there and they would rather sleep than howl along ...absolutely no "party mode!" Rig should work fine now that it is properly shod.
 
I hate the OEMs. I should have asked the dealer to replace before I purchased the vehicle. Why would Toyota put highway tires on a Trail model?

I thought the same thing for many days, and many days later someone bought my stock tires with 3600 miles for $450 cash. I bought a set of destination A/Ts for 650, less a $50 rebate. So I pretty happy in the end after spending only $150.
 
Giving these (Bridgestone) my first decent test this weekend (with some of the guys from here in BC). Hopefully they go well enough I don't have to think about spending/wasting money

Just a word of caution on taking the H/T tires offroad in the future: do a quick search about my post on getting a flat tire. There was/is road construction in front of my house and a 1/2" piece of granite punctured my tire through the tread (not in between). The granite embedded itself lengthwise in the tread. When I attempted to remove it, the air leaked out. I have 25K miles on the 4Runner and the tires are down to their first wear bar. Looks like I will have another 5-10K or so and I will be putting on A/T tires (Geolanders or Generals).

I don't know a lot about tires but that sounds like something that could happen to any tire - or is the issue the OEM's are thin and puncture very easily?
 
Are you familiar with plywood? If so, think about tires like plywood. The more ply's usually the thicker the plywood sheet. (And stiffer). Passenger tires (P) rated tires are usually 4 ply. Light truck or LT tires usually start at 6 ply. (C) rated. 8 ply (D) rated and 10 ply (E) rated.

As with plywood, what kind of wood the ply's are made of can effect both the thickness and stiffness, notwithstanding the number of plys. Depending of the materials and manufacturer, you can get a stronger and stiffer, 4 ply passenger tire as compared to another manufactures 6 ply light truck tire. All depends.

Most folks on this forum do not like the OEM tires for one reason or another, I am one of them. You might find them just fine. The problem is, you really can't tell the benefits or detriments until you change tires and drive the vehicle. If the opinion of others means anything to you, then by pure numbers, I would strongly consider changing tires.....be safe.

Is (A), (B) etc an actual category used, or is there something else in the tire spec that speaks to the thickness?

The UTQG rating is made up of three components:

TreadwearThe treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test track. A tire graded 200 would last twice as long on the government test course under specified test conditions as one graded 100. It is an oversimplification to assume treadwear grades will be proportional directly to your actual tire mileage. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use and may vary due to driving habits, service practices, differences in road characteristics and climate.

TractionTraction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B and C. They represent the tire's ability to stop on wet pavement as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. The testing does not take into account cornering, hydroplaning or acceleration.

TemperatureThe temperature grades, from highest to lowest, are A, B and C. These represent the tire's resistance to the generation of heat.

I don't think the UTQG gives you any indication of tread thickness.

Has anyone on kept their OEM tires until they needed to be replaced due to wear? If so how many miles did it take? There is hardly any wear on my treads now. Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sad to say that I still have my stock bridgestone's on. They have 50,000 miles and are still showing 6-7/32 tread left.

I've just decided to keep them on until I start getting stuck in 2wd all the time or having to use 4wd when I shouldn't.

There was another post talking about punctures and I've had these tires fixed several times due to nails and things. I'm just never lucky enough to get the nail in the sidewall.
 
Bridgwatonw Tires

Sold mine to independent tire dealer the same day I bought the vehicle. Gave me $400 credit toward Michelin MS2's. They are a great tire. Had the regular MS tires on previous 4 Runner and put 70,000 on them and the tread still looked good when I sold the vehicle.

Tore one of them up this weekend, Tire was ruined :) Shopping for a new set that will actually do the trick
