1984 4runner build

So it's not a pretty with chrome mags and stuff, doesn't matter....I installed these....cause it's what's inside that you can'nt always see that truly really counts.

I put in a winch. I just used the trail gear winch mount. My winch is a 12000lbs Titan Winch with synthetic rope. It's been tested a few times, mostly to pull FJ Cruisers...:trophy: HAHA....
So the way the bumper was bolted back on after the body lift, it was in the way. So I cut the bumper, and just made some little brakets to hold the two halves in place to keep that stock bumper look.

I'm thinking in the future to weld in the some steel tube, or channel, and then bolt those halves to still have that stock front end look, but have solid steal behind it.

Winch and playing on rocks pictures here.

Having fun. I didn't even realize I was getting airborne until I saw the pictures.

Me likey da longfields!

Have you seen Flexy Flares? Low Range has 'em, pretty cool idea. Cheap, too.

Yeah I've seen the flexy flares. Except that I always seem to think I can just do everything myself in just a couple of hours. I was also trying to cut out the rust.

C'mon even an axle change howto video was a 6 minute video on youtube how hard can this be.

What's worse is that I have a set of bushwhackers at home. But everyone keeps telling me I will smash them on trees and rocks.

I had another post sometime back inquiring about spring and shackle bushings. Well some Energy Suspension bushings are now installed in the shackles, hanger and frame mount.

The difference is phenomenal. Well the old bushings that came out needed some convincing, they were worn, some holes were oval, unevenly used up. So much much much less squeaking and creaking, and it feels tight. I don't feel it bopping around anymore. But you still know it's leaf sprung. I'm thinking chevy springs next.

I'm at a loss of what to do next. Or in what order. It works well right now. But I would like it lower geared so maybe that is next. I have a gear tcase already waiting.

Things I would like.

35" tires
Single 4.7 or
Dual 4.7/2.28 or dual 2.28
Rear Disc brake conversion
HD Drive shafts

I think this sums up the to do list.

You gotta do driveshafts and duals at the same time, and that's bucks. I'd go to a single 4.7 case first and see if that's enough for you. That's what I'm doing.

I think a 4.7 case with your lockers will get you just about anywhere you want to go.

Or two stock cases. What I am trying to achieve is to go as slow as possible and not stall. Right now I usually try to never give gas. 90% of where I've been that works. Unless I come to an obstacle or a rock garden of sorts when I might need to start and stop, climb, turn, start stop climb turn etc... What I find is that there is really a fine line between just enough gas, and too much causing less of a controlled climb.

What transmission is behind your v6?

To get the 4.7s or even stock duals, your going to have to find some top shift t-cases to drop in, as yours is most likely a chain driven case (if its the original v6 tranny)

Its expensive to build a v6 to crawl. :(

But the V6 has an amazing 120 really really old donkey ponies or how ever many it has.

Yes I need a V6 adater. I already have the proper T-case minus the 4.7 gears waiting to be used. If I do duals I would need the 23 spline input gear and dual adapter. It doe$ add up.

Just a single 4.7 is a good first stage.

having wheeled with a few guys with that set-up, they HATED it. too low for most things, but not NORMAL low range for other things so they were running 3-4-5th gear, and low range, and even then still having to rev the engine HARD to get any kind of wheel speed. it was ridiculous.

dual stock cases would be a better choice.

I run a single 4.7 case. There's definitely a hole between low range 5th gear and high range 1st gear that forces you to stop and shift in and out of low range more often than you'd like, but I wouldn't say I hate it. I'll probably eventually go to duals but the single 4.7 case is a great drop-in solution for getting lower transfer case gears.

Well, drop-in for us lucky dogs with 22RE/W56. These V6 guys have to spend more. :moon:

This is what I'm worried about. Already with just regular 4lo it's too slow sometimes.

This is all I plan to do. I think youll be fine.

If I still had the 4cyl in there, I would have probably just put in the 4.7s and lived with it.

The switching between 4hi and 4lo on the flat no abstacle sections is ok, until I hit any kind of hill. I pretty much lose all power, not sure what it's like for you guys, but if I'm just on a gravel forest road getting in or out of a trail I need to be in 2hi or 4lo to get up hilly sections of the road.

it might work OK with stock gears and 35" tires. but then 2wd would be hell, way too high geared.

the stock low is pretty good, 4.0 or 4.7 low is also GREAT, as long as you have the standard 2.28 low option as well.

the one guy I was talking about that had 4.7's finally swapped in dual cases, and had the 4.7 in the rear case. he likes it much better that way. since he could still choose 2.28 for MOST things.

I have dual 2.28 cases, and I RARELY use double low. a single 4.7 case is basically double low every time. too low for most things.
