1989 4Runner 1uzfe swap

on my "dream list"

1uz 5spd would be a fun toy on the trails :lookout:

I think it's a much better option than throwing a 350 in the truck. If your going to do it, do it right and keep it all toyota!

I'm sending my lower intake manifold, water bridge, and fuel rails to a guy in Canada to fit an M112 blower. A 1uz is ok alone, but there is nothing beter than a boosted engine!

1/30/13 Update:
Front Axle torn down, all parts ran through the Vat, sandblasted, and refinished and rebuilt tonight. I am also going over te entire frame with a wire wheel to remove any rust for refinishing. I also picked up a few parts this week include:
7M-GTE 315cc injectors for the M112
New gray shift boot for the interior
New 2nd Generation gray shift knobs for both sticks
Lexus SC400 oil pan that I will need to fit the 1UZ for the solid axle
New Inclinometer with dash pad in immaculate condition
Digital temp and compass rear view mirror
Pro Comp Rock Crawler Wheels

Supercharging a 1UZ

For anybody who is thinking about supercharging a 1UZ :) I wanted to point out a few things you will need. The stock 1uz ECU can handle up to 12lbs of boost which is much more than you would be getting from the typical M90/M112 roots blower. There is a lot of talk about the M90, but for the money and time, you are wasting it all doing an M90. M112 is the only way to go for a roots blower on a 1uz. It should yield around 6lbs of boost at most without getting into the heavy costing items. What I am going with.
1. M112 from mustang cobra. Some people used lightning m112, which should be the same, but the snout length is different on certain m112 blowers and I know for sure the cobra will work.
2. Lower intake manfold to take the M112. I am having mine made by a guy in canada who is very good at this. I found him on lextreme. He has to moddify the lower intake, fuel rail, and front water bridge. The supercharger will fit nice and low on the motor.
3. Larger fuel injetors. Some have run the factory 1uz injectors, but I would never do that as if it ever leaned out to much, you have predonations and potential serious problems. I used 7mge non turbo supra injectors, which are 315cc in size
4. water/methanol kit. Heat is very bad, and without an intercooler system, the air needs to be cooled. Water/Meth is a cheap and reliable way to cool the air. I am, at this piont, going with an AEM kit.

In total, my supercharger cost will be roughly 1600 in parts, plus whatever my machinest charges to modify the M112 to work. All in all, a very worthwhile cost to add 100rwhp and such a sexy sound to your vehicle.

M112

Picked up the M112 yesterday. Will have to grind off the inner lip underneath the supercharger so that it will mate with the modified lower intake manifold.
Also was emailed that marlin crawler had the R150f short throw shifters back in stock, so I ordered that as well. My shift was sloppy anyway and needed a new replacement.

From a guy who has previously installed an M62 (TRD supercharger) on a 3.4, this m112 is massive compared to that. I was shocked at how much bigger this supercharger is compared to the smaller TRD unit. I was getting 9lb of boost on that little M62 with the URD fuel upgrade kit, I'm hoping for 6-7lb on this unit with a 3.25" 6 rib pulley and AEM water/meth kit for boosted gasoline engines.

One humble question, why can't you use an engine out of a late 80's or early 90's Cressida? I see loads of low km examples around BC.
regards

You could, not sure why you would want too though. There have been some supra 7mgte swaps, but I'm a bigger fan of v8s and supercharges more than smaller displacement and turbo.

:wow2:

Holy crap. This thing is gonna be sick. When are you hoping to have it back together?

I'm hoping by end of July. It's a full restoration that I'm getting perfect inside and out though, so it could be longer. Currently the stages go as follows
1. Sas ( about 1/2 done)
2. Body work, paint, and upholstery
3. Engine install and tuning

A couple of things I picked up:
New V6 Brake Calipers
HAWK Brake Pads
12 qts Redline Mt-90 for Transmission, transfer case, front/rear diffs
AEM water/methanol injection
285/75r16 MT MTZ
Procomp rock crawlers

Love this thread! Is is necessary to use the SC400 instrument cluster instead of the LS400... or even possibly the stock 4Runner cluster?

Just came across a LS400 with some rear end damage, gonna check to see if it's going to be worth getting as a donor.

You can use either of the three. The 4Runner Custer would have been the easiest to use. I used the sc400 cluster because I loved the idea of the modern look.

The body is on the way for total restoration. Going with titanium metallic from 4th gen 4runners.

this is my dream! subscribed!
lookin forward to seein how this thing comes together. how do you modify the ECU to handle boost?

No ecu modifications are necessary, the ecu can compensate for the additional fuel for the 5 or 6lbs of boost (less depending on your altitude). I had to add bigger injectors to deliver the additional fuel, but that's it. The fuel pump is from the sc400 so no worries there. To get the most power from the setup, it would be best to replace the factory ecu with a stand alone, but that's not necessary to stay around 400hp.

Nice Build! (I have the same 4Runner 3.0 5spd, and I love it)

You know, how many LPH (fuel pump sc400)?

The 5VZ fuel pump for the 1UZ, works well anyway?

regards

Time for an update

It's been slow going, since I'm not doing the fabrication myself, I rely on the experts and a big project usually gets pushed to the side for smaller well paying projects :) Thanks to Dous for riding along with me to check up on my project last weekend! A lot of things still underway, I have two vehicles, I took the body off one to work on the chasis while the other body was at the bodyshop. Once the bodywork is done, I'll take that body off and put it on the Solid Axle Swapped Chasis. we fitted the entire drivetrain and made the clearance for the steering. Motor is fitted and mounts are in. The engine is being torn down to replace all gaskets and seals, starter contacts, sensors, and then the heads are being ported to open them up a bit. Supercharger Cams are going in along with better Valve Springs. I'm in contact with a tuner for the standalone ems to run this beast. Didn't want to use factory ECU because I wanted no complications with the 5 spd, I wanted to use the Ford Cobra throttle body, and I wanted a good tune. Let's just hope the transmission hold up. Keep you updated as I know more.

Progress! Saw this thread and was really hoping for an update. Just curious, why can't you use the stock cluster and just splice the two harnesses together?

As far as I know, the stock cluster will work and has worked for some. I personally love the sc400 cluster and I went with it solely for asthetical reasons. Later I thought it was a good idea to keep the redline the same as it should be. The 1uz redlines around 6500 and the sr5 cluster at like 5500.
