1993 4Runner Clutch Problems

Hey. I have a 1993 4Runner V6 Manual 4X4 with 116K on it. The clutch has been going out since I bought it back in Dec '06, but it is starting to get really bad.

When I start out in first gear when the engine and clutch are both cold I get violent shaking and usually a little slippage in all the gears until the clutch is warmed up. I am assuming a need to have the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing replaced. I'm not sure if I need to have anything else done since it is a 4X4.

Any idea how much I would be looking at to have my clutch replaced.

Clutch job on a 4x4 is no different than a 2x4, just a little more to remove (t-case).
Starting calling local shops for an estimate.

If you're planning on replacing the whole thing, it might even be worth the time to do it yourself. Once you've got the transmission backed out and the clutch off, putting in the new one shouldn't be too difficult. In my experience, the most difficult and time-consuming part of replacing drive-line parts is getting the old ones out. Once you've got the old parts out, putting in the new parts and bolting everything back together seems easy in comparison.

As far as what it would cost to take it to a local shop, a lot of that depends on where you are, how many shops you've got around you, and the extent of the damage. If it's just the clutch, it won't be much more than parts and labor; if there's been damage to the flywheel or the transmission, it can get expensive very quickly.

I called the shop that I normally take my truck to and they estimated about $780 out the door. Does this seem like a high price?

I would consider doing it myself, but I need to have it back as quickly as possible. I know that my shop can get it done faster than I can.

$780 must be about standard if they are providing the parts. My brother paid $750 about four or five years ago.

I am looking into getting my clutch replaced now and I have found a shop that will replace it for $250/labor if I provide the parts. - Parts should be around $200 with new flywheel.

However, if I hadn't just had back surgery I would definitely replace the clutch myself. I have done several and they are typically an easy 1 day job, provided I already have the parts required to do the job.

BTW - The parts list should always include a six-pack (or two) to share with the person who helps you get the trans re-aligned and connected to the vehicle.

Before you go that route try replacing your clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. combined you are looking at most around 50 dollars for parts and about an hours worth of work for yourself.


Also don't forget the flywheel if you go the clutch replacement route. to purchase all the parts for the clutch you are looking around 200 in parts so 500 in labor ....

Thanks for the info. I just wanted to make sure that $780 wasn't too high.

Is there any way to tell if the clutch master and slave cylinder need to be replaced?

My 1993 4runner V6 4X4 isn't moving until I get to around 5500 RPM manual transmission. It won't move in any gear first or reverse it just started happening today May 25 2022. Any suggestions to get me at least home (5miles). My friend is a mechanic and can look at it from there
