Yes jiggle valve is at 6 o'clock. And the dash gauge shows me it's overheating. Which is backed up by it boiling over. No, it doesn't smell of exhaust in the catch tank. That's how I confirmed the blown head gasket so that was what I checked first since I had just done them. Plus it had a cylinder 3 misfire so that was a dead giveaway. I have a feeling that the problem was from the internal trans cooler overloading the cooling system and it couldn't keep up.

Umm sorry but I tend to disagree with this thought. During this mid-summer (July) I drove thru west texas mountains, the sierra madre (twice) and the rockies some in temps as high as 110; the engine always remained between 190-198, never higher. 4runners have very good cooling systems so any overheating is due to a problem, its not the hills - those are just magnifying an existing problem. Luck to the OP.

Well I'll try it with the o/d off again and then with the o/d on and see if it makes a difference. My eyes were on the gauge damn near the entire drive and it didn't budge at all. And if that's not the cause, then it must've been the jiggle valve. I don't know how, but the engineers at toyota do lol
