I've been working on an LED swap for the dashboard of my '97 SR5, and troubleshooting a few things. So far I've seen a bunch of threads with questions about what type of bulbs to purchase, what goes where, etc. I'm a visual learner, so I figured I'd make a diagram of the back of the '97 cluster, mostly to help myself remember, but also for anyone else with a '97 (although this cluster may be the same as other years, I don't know).

Considerations
  • I marked the gauge cluster bulbs as red, but they can be ANY color you want depending on the look you're going for
  • The charging circuit indicator (battery symbol) should not be changed to an LED, or you'll have problems. Because science (electrical isn't my strong suit).
  • The warning indicator lights along the bottom and side of the cluster are not on the dimmer—I bought 19-lumen replacements that were way too bright, ended up going with 6-lumen instead. Remember that (with the exception of 4WD and ECT power, amiright) these lights won't usually be on.
  • The warning indicator covers are already tinted and do not require a tinted bulb—I purchased tinted bulbs anyway and was happy with the results
  • There are 2 warning indicator slots along the bottom of my SR5 that are empty/blocked off. No light would show through even if you installed a bulb.
  • Other (feel free to respond with anything relevant and I'll add it here)

Thanks for posting this! When you get this project wrapped up, I would like to see a list of the actual LEDs with links to purchasing sources.
 
I'm just about to break into my cluster to do the three gauges.. now you've got me wanting to order another dozen bulbs to go FULL LED!

I can add some thoughts.

I did the LED swap and the #74's were too bright for the dash lights that are always on at night, such as Cruise Control, or for me the ECT button. They also do not seat completely so use bulb grease on each one or you'll be opening the dash up again to get them to seat better.

I ended up hacking the body off some of the #74's to angle the LED into the size of the housing and not straight into my eyes.

Now that it is done you'd never know the difference but they are not quite plug and play, that is if you drive at night at all.

I know this is a little older thread, but did anyone ever have any before/after pics? Looking at ordering and am a little cautious about them being too bright as others have mentioned. I am looking at ordering the white instead of Red for the #194s. Anyone have any experience with this they could "shed some light on" :rofl:

So I'm about to upgrade my lights this weekend. The SuperBrightLED miniature wedge's come without a base -- does anyone know if the OEM #74 bulbs pull out of the bases or do I need to buy new bases as well? I'm assuming they just pull out, have just never replaced bulbs like this.

The bulbs in the gauge cluster pull out of their bases.

I can't find any notes about warning indicators not coming with bases, just notes about a couple of the slots being blocked off and unused. As I said, all of the bulbs in the gauge cluster pull out of their bases.
