1engineer prefers to talk about hoobly gook rather than sales figures...so I'll do it

Did I say that units sold is the only metric we can use to understand the ’14 market? If so, that would be silly. I provided all those sales statistics just to put the market into some context. The fact that the T4R is up 46% in ’14 is impressive, but so is the the RAV4 increase. And don’t forget that “successful” percentage point sales increases are inversely correlated to market share. Heck, the Lexus GX increased by 127%, but no one is dancing a jig.

As far as “break even” points and CAFE standards, I’m sure you’re not trying to suggest that Toyota gives away their RAV4s at cost so they can make a profit on their T4Rs.

Not at all. I was just really responding to your last paragraph and also to jrandom. I meant that selling a proportionate mix of vehicles is much better than depending on one big seller that is not really efficient.

I'm sure Quentin meant the 4Runner was leading in PERCENTAGE of year over year sales growth......

What was meant and what was interpreted :D It is how i read it, not trying incite, regardless I am super happy to see its sales rebound! I just dont think it has to do solely on its looks.

That explanation helps and I appreciate the insight :) although...
I was basically comparing it to the 5th gen T4R sales. We've been pretty solid at 40k to 50k for the whole generation.

My point is 5th Gen was released during a "recession", not even at the start of but in the middle of, so its numbers have always been low. I would not be surprised to see next years or the year after exceed 70k or greater. I believe it is much more economic than looks, that all. :wof::wave:

While I'm sure dekeman is out earning a toonie so he can catch the latest Maclean and Maclean act tonight while he eats some poutine, here are the updated sales numbers you hoser:

Last month, SUVs and light trucks accounted for 58% of industry sales... can't believe that's nearly a 60/40 split vs. any other segment. Nuts.

Maybe a few hundred. Not enough to matter.
Low gas prices, quality product + desirability = sales.

This is very true.

People are like lemmings running in and out of the light truck/SUV market when it comes to gas prices. Very very few of these headless chickens have any idea how to calculate the actual annual delta on fuel price fluctuations, let alone the relatively small actual change in total cost of ownership that results from fuel price changes.

The savy truck/SUV buyer holds their older SUV when gas prices go down and sells old/buys newer when it goes up...buying low and selling high more than pays for the relatively small change in total cost of ownership that results from fuel price fluctuations.
